Oakville has declared June 1-7 as Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week and is encouraging residents to learn more about the exotic beetle from Asia and the protective measures they can take to conserve Oakville's tree canopy. As part of recent Arbour Day celebrations, the Town launched a woodlands restoration project at Sheridan Valley Park. It saw more than 200 trees planted to enhance Oakville's tree canopy and regenerate the woodlands affected by the insect. "Oakville is leading the way in EAB management," said Mayor Rob Burton. It's being held next Wednesday, June 11 at Oakville Town Hall at 7 p.m. Discussion will stem from Oakville's Planning and Development Council's special meeting last week, where councillors reviewed staff reports on a Midtown Oakville Strategy, which looks at the area bounded by the QEW and Cornwall Road, Chartwell Road to the Sixteen Mile Creek valley. The plan introduces new zoning for the area, including new use permissions, regulations and parking requirements. "Council's vision for Midtown is a vibrant urban centre that enhances Oakville's outstanding livability," said Mayor Rob Burton. "We'll start to turn our Midtown vision into a reality by extensively consulting the public, the end result being highly re ective of Oakville residents' input."
