Oakville's Lindsay Grigg and the national women's inline team had to settle for a silver medal for the third time in four years after being edged 3-2 in overtime by the United States Sunday. Last year, the U.S. scored twice in 14 seconds in the final three minutes to edge Canada 2-1 for the gold and in 2011 scored with less than a second to play to win the championship with a 3-2 victory. Canada interrupted the Americans' gold-medal streak with a 4-2 victory in the 2012 championship Lindsay Grigg game. Canada won its first five games to reach the final at this year's tournament in Toulouse, France. After Canada opened with a 13-1 win over Latvia, Grigg scored twice in a 5-1 victory over Australia. Canada closed out pool play with a 6-1 win over Namibia. Grigg set up three goals in a 10-0 quarter-final win over Italy and then had a goal as Canada topped New Zealand 4-1 in the semifinals. In the final, the U.S. took the lead twice, but each time Canada came back to tie it up. It took more than 10 minutes of overtime before the Americans scored the game winner. Grigg finished third in team scoring with three goals and five assists in six games. A member of the Canadian team since 2010, Grigg has a gold and four silver medals at worlds. She is currently helping the Canadian junior women go after a gold medal, serving as an assistant coach for the team. There are seven Oakville players on the Canadian junior team, which split its first two games. The Halton Minor Ball Hockey League's atom (pictured above) and peewee A Aces both won provincial titles last weekend in Kitchener. A photo of the peewee A team will appear in an upcoming edition of the Beaver's sister paper, the Burlington Post. | photo submitted HMBHL teams come up Aces at provincials Two Halton Minor Ball Hockey League Aces teams lived up to their monicker at last weekend's provincial championships in Kitchener. The HMBHL's atom squad won all five of its games -- four of them by four goals or more -- to claim an Ontario Ball Hockey Association BB title, while the peewee A Aces went 5-1 to also win their BB division. Two more HMBHL teams, the peewee B and tyke clubs, earned provincial silver. Atoms' victory sweet The atom Aces routed Penetanguishene 7-2 in the championship game after defeating North York (62), Oshawa (5-0), Belleville (2-1) and West Hill (61) earlier in the tournament. The provincial title was particularly sweet for the atoms, who lost in the Ontario final last year. Members of the team are Brady Afelskie, Ryan Facchini, Ethan Halliwell, Liam Hamilton, Maxwell Heslop, Ryan Hogan, Evan Kollee, Benjamin Lyytikainen, Ben Madeley, Myles McArthur, Lennon Pritchard, Luca Rosiello, Andrew Rozman, Matthew Secor, Jack Talbot and Andrew Toscano. The team is coached by Peter Afelskie, Petri Lyytikainen and Mark Talbot. All-Halton peewee final It was an all-HMBHL final in peewee BB play as Aces A downed Aces B by a 4-1 count. The two teams took completely different routes to the final. Aces A lost just once in its first five games, while Aces B dropped two of its first three contests before posting overtime wins in the quarter-finals and semifinals. Aces A needed an overtime win of its own in the semifinals, when Jack Tos scored in the extra session to give the team a 2-1 victory over Brampton. Other members of the Aces A team are Adrian Channell, Joshua Elsbury, Maxwell Folk, Matthew Franzoi, Tyler Hall, Dylan Jackson, Ty Jackson, Sebastian Labora, Lucas Leitgeb, Greg Misiak, Jordyn Mughal, Trystan Mughal, Brendan Porter, Ben Randell and Cole Smallwood. Leo Franzoi, Tony Labora and Shane Smallwood coach the club. Lucas DiFilippo was the hero in both OT wins for Aces B, providing the game-winners in victories over Oshawa (2-1) and Penetanguishene (1-0). Trenton Perry provided solid goaltending for Aces B in both contests. Other teams The tyke Aces captured HMBHL's first-ever provincial medal in the youngest division, reaching the final before falling 3-0 to North York. Earlier in the tournament, the tykes defeated Penetanguishene 5-2, routed Shelburne 8-3, lost 4-2 to North York and downed London 4-1. The HMBHL's novice Aces lost their BB semifinal, 3-2 to eventual champion Cambridge. The association's bantam and junior Aces teams will play their provincial championship tournaments this weekend. Golfers help Canada win N.A. Cup Oakville golfers Andrew Russ and John Burghardt secured the clinching points as CJGA Team Canada won its first North America Cup in seven years, defeating IJGT Team USA 15.512.5 last week at Oldfield Golf Club in Bluffton, S.C. Russ earned Canada its 14th point of the competition, winning his singles Andrew Russ match play game 3 and 2 on the final day of the three-day event. Russ's victory came with Burghardt holding a 1-up lead on the 18th hole, meaning Canada had guaranteed itself the 14.5 points needed to win the cup. Burghardt went on to win his round, 2 up. Canada entered Day 3 with a 10-4 lead after dominating the team match play portion of the tournament. "This is hands down the best display of golf and competition I've ever seen," said CJGA Team Canada non-playing captain Stephen Nixon. "It means so much to be a part of the team that finally brought the cup home. In a sport that is supposed to be all about the individual, these kids were unbelievable in the way that they John Burghardt came together as a team so quick." Russ and Burghardt are both members of the Glen Abbey Juniors under-19 amateur program. Russ attends St. Thomas Aquinas high school and his home club is Trafalgar Golf & Country Club. Burghardt is a high school student at Loyola who golfs out of Indian Wells. Toronto resident Tyler Erb, another Glen Abbey Juniors member, also played for Canada at the North America Cup.
