Parking woes in the offing in Bronte by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, July 17, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Improved parking in Bronte Village has been the aim of a year-long study by the Town of Oakville and Bronte Parking Committee. One result has been the addition of road signs to better inform people of the three-hour parking limit on the streets. The committee, formed after the Bronte BIA (Business Improvement Area) adopted the Bronte Business Action Plan in 2012. It looked to improve area parking and boost the economy. A major concern, heard by the Town of Oakville's Community Services Committee Monday, is poor turnover rates in prime on-street parking locations. "The most practical way to promote parking turnover in the Bronte Village and fund increased enforcement would be to consider metering Bronte Road south of Lakeshore Road West, and Marine Drive between Jones Street to Bronte Road," the report states. Another option is to consider funding more enforcement officers at budget time -- a move staff doesn't favour. Engineering & Construction Director Dan Cozzi said the Town will review current parking restrictions on the north side of Marine Drive from Jones to East Street, and poll residents on their opinions. It will also conduct a regular parking utilization survey, such as those done annually downtown and in Kerr Village, to assess current parking supply and demand. The last one was done in 2011 in Bronte. Cozzi said staffers are supportive of conducting the survey every three years in the Bronte Commercial District. "We do believe $15,000 once every three years is a worthwhile expense and we're going to include that in our budget request out of the parking reserve," he said. Cozzi said areas along Bronte Road, south of Lakeshore Road, and Marine Drive between Bronte Road and Jones Street are operating at or over capacity while other areas aren't as busy. Staff will also look into long-term/monthly permit parking for area employees. Bronte BIA Executive Director Ann Sargent said most parking in Bronte Village is on private property. There are approximately 200 public parking spots she noted, adding parking may not look like a problem in Bronte, but is becoming one.
