The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e sd a y June 5, 2002 - C3 Peter McCusker · Oakville Beaver The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders, celebrating their 2-1 win over St. Mary's in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (G-HAC) championhip. are seeded #1 at OFSAA this week. Aquinas are ranked #1 at OFSAA this week By Lindsey Craig S P E C IA L TO TH E B E A V E R The Si. Thomas Aquinas Raiders senior girls soccer team have made it back to the provincial girls soccer championship where they are seeded first, and their goal is to improve on last year's result. Mind you. having won a silver medal last year, that can only mean one thing -- a gold medal. The Raiders earned their place in this week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (O FSA A ) tournament by beating St. Mary's 2-1 in last Thursday's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (G-HAC) final at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington. Going into the game Aquinas had lost to St. Mary's twice before in tournament play. But then again, timely revenge wins are getting to be a habit for the Aquinas team who defeated Iroquois Ridge 2-1 earlier in the week in the Halton championship, after losing to them 5-2 in the regular season. "I had a feeling we would do really well if we tried our hardest." said the Raiders' grade 9 centre mid-fielder. Amanda Cicchini. "W e've got a lot of skill and when we work as a team it's amazing." Aquinas defender Kersha Walker credited the Raiders' win to their determination and intensity. "1 knew we could win if we played the best that we could and if we played with heart." Aquinas coach Dan Seixeiro felt his team was full value for their G-HAC title. " We played hard and deserve to be where we are today," he said. " It was a big thing that we had the wind in the first half. We put on lots of pres sure." Aquinas took the lead early in the game when strong winds helped send Karen Zmirak's corner kick into the far comer of the goal. W hile the St. Mary's attack also came on strong, the Aquinas defence worked hard to take possession and clear the ball from their end. Then, part way through the first half. Aquinas upped the score on a play in front of the net when Leanne Darosa popped one in to make it 2-0. "Once we got those two goals, I was confident we had the game." said Walker. Later in the second half, however, with the Raiders having controlled most of the play. St. Mary's put one in on a scramble in front of the net and increased their offensive pressure. The Hamilton team's luck ended there, howev er. as the score remained 2-1 for the Raiders when the final whistle blew. As for the upcoming O FSA A tournament, in which last year Aquinas lost in the championship to a team they had already beaten in the prelimi nary round. Walker said the team wouldn't make the same mistake twice. "W e're not going to underestimate any team, no matter what." she said. O FSA A play begins tomorrow (Thursday, June 6) in Hamilton with the final match taking place on Saturday. As they have all year, Aquinas will be without their star player. Kara Lang, a 1 5-year-old Grade 10 player, who did not suit up with the team because of national team commitments. Ironically, hours after the Raiders won their match 2-1 over St. Mary's at Sherwood Forest Park. Lang suited up for Canada's national U-19 team in a 4-0 win over their Italian national coun terparts, also at Sherwood Forest Park, in the first of a three-game series. Lang had a goal and an assist in the game. Earlier this year. Lang was actually called up to the national senior women's team where she real ly made the most of her first `caps' in a tourna ment in Portugal, scoring four goals in her first three games. In last year's O FSA A silver medal run for Aquinas, Lang, then only in Grade 9, scored 1 1 goals in the six O FSA A plavoff games. OFSAA BOYS Oakville, which had a very strong year in high school soccer, is also represented at the O FSA A boys championship. Iroquois Ridge is seeded tenth at the event which runs Thursday through to Saturday in Ottawa. The Ridge advanced Friday with a 2-1 win in the G-HAC championship game against host Cardinal Newman from Hamilton. Earlier in the week, the Ridge edged Q.E. Park 2-1 in the Halton championship. Top regional finishers advance to OFSAA The provincial high school track and field championships take place Thursday to Saturday in Belleville, and Oakville w ill send a sizeable contingent.
