This bright yellow bloom is the soci ety's 'Flower of Hope.' Daffodils have been sold in Oakville since 1 977. For 25 years, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of dedicated, caring volunteers of Ontario Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Oakville. $500,000 has been raised for research, patient services and education promotions. During this time the Sorority 'sisters' have partnered and supported the Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society in selling the blooms In the early days. Beta Sigma Phi vol unteers recalled standing in snow, sleet and rain on Lakeshore Road in down town Oakville selling the flowers. The Beta Sigma Phi ladies are as rec ognizable as the daffodils they are sell ing during Daffodil Days weekend kick ing off the Society's door-to-door resi dential canvass. For almost all of the 25 years the daf fodils have been stored at the Brewer's Retail on Kerr Street. From there the Beta Sigma Phi vol unteers take the 200 boxes of blooms to the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides headquarters for assembling into bunches for delivery for presale orders to businesses. The entire process of counting money, ninning the daffodils to the vari ous outlets to replenish the supplies and selling the blooms reflects over 120 vol unteer hours donated by the Sorority this weekend. The cost of the daffodils during this quarter century period has only increased from $2 for a bunch of 10 in 1 977 to $5 a bunch today. The Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society volunteers and staff sin cerely thanks the Beta Sigma Phi and truly appreciates all the time and support given by everyone over the past 25 years.
