Ministry of Environment monitoring clean up continued from p.1 was a black slick on each side of the river bank going up onto our lawn. Even (Monday) night the smell was horrendous." As of Tuesday morning, Blane said the slick on her property had yet to be cleaned up by anyone. Ministry of the Environment District Supervisor for Halton-Peel Ryan Thorsley said his office received reports of petroleum odours and diesel along Wedgewood Creek Monday and, working with the Town, determined the source of the spill was from the CN Rail yard. Thorsley said the Ministry has directed CN Rail to precisely describe the extent of the spill's impact and provide a remediation plan. Fedchyshyn confirmed the company is working to clean up the mess and ensure it does not worsen. "CN Environment has removed any residual product from the yard drip trays so that no more product will escape," she said. "CN Environment is also surveying the area and placing booms and absorbent pads in the creek to stop the further flow of product, which will be removed and any damage remediated." Thorsley said the Ministry has confirmed a clean-up effort is underway, but said Ministry staff would be returning to the site to ensure the work is completed. 3 | Thursday, July 31, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com I feel very upset to say the least... People have little kids, they have dogs. Everything is going to be affected by this and I don't know for how long. We don't know what breathing this stuff in is doing to us... My neighbours and I would just like our backyards made safe again. Sandra Blane Oakville Blane said she is very concerned about the wildlife that call Wedgewood Creek home and the effect the fuel spill will have on them. She is also concerned about the health of her family and their neighbours. "I feel very upset to say the least... People have little kids, they have dogs. Everything is going to be affected by this and I don't know for how long," said Blane. "There is a couple, a few houses down, that has a new baby. We don't know what breathing this stuff in is doing to us... My neighbours and I would just like our backyards made safe again." Thorsley said no impacts to wildlife have been observed at this time. The Town said it will continue to provide feedback to CN as it develops a remediation plan to ensure the Town's and residents' concerns are fully addressed. The Town has said any impact to private property can be reported to Aaron Stadnyk, Environment Officer at CN, at 905-669-3377 or Aaron. stadnyk@cn.ca. Sandra Blane has circulated a notice to her neighbours informing them of the oil spill and providing contact information regarding the clean-up. | photo by Franki Ikeman Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_ photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) Time to register new students The Halton District School Board (HDSB) is encouraging Oakville parents to register new students for school Aug. 11-15.
