The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 11, 2002 - 1 5 A volunteer for dll seasons n Dec. 12, the Y 's park ing lot was closed to allow for grading of the construction site and installation of curbs. The Town o f Oakville granted on-street parking in the surrounding area and a "kissand-ride" system was set up for parents bringing their young sters to pre-school programs. Some o f the pre-school pro grams involve both parents and children, though. These parents had to park on the streets and make their way to the Y on foot. Y staff members dressed in safety vests worked rotating shifts out on Rebecca Street, to ensure the safety of parents try ing to cross the road with their small children in tow. Leonard Cope, who lives in the area and has volunteered for past events at the Y, dropped by later in the week to check on the progress of construction and saw staff escorting Y members and participants across the busy street. He immediately went to A1 Evans, the Y 's facility manager, to volunteer his services, saying that Y staff should be inside doing their jobs, not spending time directing traffic. Leonard became a familiar Career information night Jan. 17 The Halton District School Board (HDSB) will host a Student/Parent Career Information meeting on Thursday, Jan. 17. Y members and participants, neighbours and even strangers smiled and waved as he escorted yet another mom and her little one across the street. His help became even more necessary when Oakville Hydro arrived with a number of trucks to install new poles on Rebecca. At the same time, the traffic in and out of the Y 's construc tion site had increased with the arrival o f cement trucks bring ing concrete for the curbing. Through good and bad weather - sun, rain, wind, snow - Leonard was at his post in front of the Y, timing his arrivals to coincide with the pre-school program schedules. His willingness to spend long hours directing traffic freed up Y volunteer Leonard Cope staff time, but, more important ly, gave moms and their young ones a feeling of security and welcome when they arrived at the Y. The YMCA o f Oakville would like to thank all those who were inconvenienced by the temporary closing of the parking lot - our members and program participants, our neigh bours and volunteers - for their patience. And we offer a very big tip of the hat to volunteer extraordi naire Leonard Cope.
