4 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 11, 2002 Crime Stoppers program means `taking care of your neighbours' By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Crime Stoppers is more than merely an impersonal snitch line, says Halton Regional Police Det. Lee-Ann Ansell. It's truly an extension of "talcing care of your neighbour." The proof, she explains, is in the numbers: in 1995, Crime Stoppers of Halton received 266 tips totalling $4,200 in rewards, of which only $2,500 was ever claimed. In 2001, 611 tips came in totalling $7,000 worth of rewards but only $1,110 was claimed. "What that tells me is that people in the community want to call in and solve crimes but they're not motivated by money," said Ansell, who co-ordinates the local program. ed to also include every Tipsters from seniors to "What that tells me is thing from welfare and children have helped solve tax fraud to animal abuse. that people in the crimes, such as the nine Pleased as she is by year old whose informa community want to call the public's participation, tion led to the identity of a in and solve crimes but Ansell is similarly grati child arsonist. In fact, says Ansell, gave $3,500 and $2,700 respectively. the scope of crimes reported has expand- The Halton Regional Police Services Board pitched in with $4,500. "We are so thankful," said Ansell. Their money is well spent: Crime Stoppers of Halton invests its money in a wide variety of programs that spreads awareness in schools and with the general public. One major push this year will be with seniors. They also have a co-op program for high school students. Major Crime Stopper signage was installed at Bronte Creek Provincial Park as well as in other well-traveled spots such as arenas and fitness centres. This year's budget has been set at $76,000, down from 2001 when it stood at $93,000. The reason for the difference, says Ansell, is because in 2001 Crime Stoppers held a major ($25,000) fundraising cam paign to pay for a number of capital expenditures for such items as promotional materi als, a laptop and projector for speaking engagements. Always frugal, Crime Stoppers uses a 1993 van but, thanks to the generosity of Dee Signs, the vehicle's graphics were updated. Thankfully, said Ansell, cor porate sponsors like Cogeco pitch in to help promote Crime Stoppers while Rogers pays for the pro gram's telephone. Even the people behind I- 8OO-GOTJUNK sponsored fridge magnets. Last July, Solicitor General David Turnbull pre sented the Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers (OACS) with a $200,000 grant to support the organization's province-wide after-hours hotline to make it a 24-hour a day service. Ansell also had high praise for the media - from TV and radio to the Internet and print - to push awareness and help with fundraising. To help ensure the pro gram remains vital, Ansell has put out the call for volun teer members for Crime Stoppers' board. Those inter ested should call 825-4747, ext. 5139.
