A fter com ing o ff Jaguar's big XJ sedan in a previous road test. I'm now driving the Ja g u a r S-T ype Sport. Like the Big X J. it is all Jaguar but it is m uch m ore co n tem porary, and som ehow , m ore stylish. W hile tradition can add a great am ount o f ch aracter to a car, it's no good unless thet tradition is c o n tinued. The XJ is a direct link to the tradition w ith all its w arts an d scars and there w ere a lot o f them , e sp e c ia lly ju s t b e fo re Ford Jim Robinson took over. The S-Type is a link to the character o f Jaguar w hich is the lovely lines, w onderful sm ells and feel, but put together w ith 2002 reliability and road holding. T hey are both aw eso m e cars, m ind you, but the S-Type m ore than com petes against im m ediate rivals like the BM W 5 -S e rie s and M ercedes-B enz E -C lass w hereas the XJ has not, in my m ind, kept pace with the S -C lass M erc and the revo lutionary new 7-Series. And that is the key in this super luxury class, isn't it? You have to keep leading in style and technology o r you soon fall behind. You can com e to the show d rip p in g in luxury, i.e. L incoln Town Car. but if you ain't got the looks or the toys, you aren't in the ball gam e. Well, the S-Type certainly has the looks. Penned by the late G eoff Law son and his team , the character lines o f the fam ous Mk. II are there from the scalloped headlight eye brow s to the ovide grille to the fall aw ay at the back o f the bustle. T he S-Type is available in tw o basic m odels: the 3.0-litre (S59.950) with 240 hp. 221 ft/lb o f torque V6; o r the 4.0 litre ($70,950) with the sam e V8 found in the XJ8 sedan and XK8 sportscar here m aking 2 8 1 hp and 287 ft/lb o f torque. Both are equipped w ith Jag u ar's signature "JG a te " shifter, five-speed autom atic transm ission. Like its G erm an rivals. Jaguar has started offering perform ance and visual pieces in-house and in the case o f the S-Type it is the Sport o p tio n a v a ila b le on both engine m odels. From the outside a clue is the b o d y -c o lo u r g rille su rro u n d and body-colour bum per caps. U nder the skin, things get serious with the C o m p u te r A ctiv e T echnology S uspension (CATS). It is a twostage adaptive ride control that auto m atically selects firm or soft shock travel in response to road condi tions. B igger 17-inch alloy w heels w ith 235/50R series 17-inch per form ance tires are fitted. The Sport package adds $2,900 to the base price. In sid e the S-T ype S port gets ex c lu siv e eq u ip m en t and interior trim like b olstered sport seats in per forated leather, an all-leather steer ing w heel, and a kind o f charcoal colour used on the carpets and the dashboard m ouldings. I didn't mind that, but the m id-gray colour birds' eye m aple trim seem ed out o f place on a car painted a wonderful bur gundy. For those w ho want to go faster, there is the R version o f the S-Type that features a supercharged version o f the V8. T here are a num ber o f luxury options that put the S-Type squarely into the Big Toys for Big Boys cate gory and one is the car's voice-acti vated c o n tro ls. Now adapted by oth er m akers. Jaguar was the first. O ne thing that Jaguar still does is give that w onderful "thunk" sound when the door is shut. The phrase often im itated , never d u p licated com es to mind. How do the British do it? T he S-Type fits my corpulent body to a "T ". The sightlines o f this ca r w ere also an improve m ent over the XJ. espe Had I the money, c ially w hen backing up. the S-Type would W hile the Scertainly be on my Type had shopping list. rear parking rad ar se n sors. I didn't need them , where I was lost without them on the XJ. W ith our unseaso n ab ly m ild weather, it was possible to set the clim ate control to run "low" w hile cracking the sunroof. At speed on the highway, this is one o f the few sunroofs that doesn't send up a how l. It's nice to drive hom e from w ork with Ted O 'R iley (H ey Ted don't leave the station) p lay in g great ja z z on the Jag's Prem ium Sound system . I have not had a chance to drive the S-Type R yet. but I'm beginning to w onder if that isn't overkill. There seem s to be a tendency tow ards stuffing m onster engines into vehi cles including SU V s com ing to m ar ket w ith 4 5 0 hp supercharged engines. W ho needs to go 250 kmh through the w ilderness? Enough o f my rant and back to the S-Type where I found the V8 to have a delicious flow o f torque from rest right up to passing. Braking is very positive and Jaguar's version o f pitch and yaw c o n tro l called D ynam ic Stability C ontrol (D SC) is available. But I don't think it is needed because o f the stance o f this car. W ith w heels really out at the four corners it is very "four square" on the road and very little hangs outside the footprint o f the tires. T hat, in turn, m eans the m ass is contained inside the parallelogram fram ed by the lire patch adding to stability at all speeds. Had I the m oney, the S-Type would certainly be on my shopping list. This is one o f those cars where it has to be experienced in real life and real time in order to enjoy the feel and scent o f the m aterials like the hides and the slick/cool feel o f chrome. And while l think the Jaguar tra ditions are w orth saving. I'm glad they are savored as part of the whole package - a package that is leading edge and w ell-bred at the sam e time.
