Under an arbour decorated with twinkling lights and with 17 of their closest family and friends as witnesses. Edward Hayden and Dianne Cousineau said, " I do" on Christmas Eve. · The Christmas season being their favourite time of the year, the newly weds said it was naturally the perfect occasion to exchange vows. The intimate wedding took place at the couple's home, with rings exchanged underneath a hand-made arbour -- built by the pair in four weekends -- in their large backyard, and a kissing stone a few steps away, a penny with the year they met under neath it. Cousineau's 1 1-year-old niece was the maid of honour, and her nephew, 10 , was best man. Already nervous, Hayden said he really started to sweat when the bride didn't make her appearance for 15 min utes. Apparently, she misplaced his wedding band, but found it just in time. Though it didn't snow like the new lyweds had hoped, the day was a mem orable event, especially for their guests who enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner with all the fixings prepared and served by no other than the bride and groom themselves. Hayden explained that turkey has always been a Christmas tradition and getting married didn't change that. " The guests said it was the First time ever they heard a bride say, `I gotta check on the turkey.'" said Hayden, a maintenance mechanic for Toronto Community Housing Corporation. " I 'm expecting to gain lots of weight with her; she's a great cook," he added. The marriage, the second for both, came as a surprise to the couple who met more than a year ago at a singles dance. Both said they were bored to tears and went outside for fresh air, and began to talk. He asked her to marry him a year later. " This was the best Christmas ever," said the groom. 44. Cousineau. 42. said they w ill have a larger party in the summer before spending their honeymoon in Australia next winter. Hands claw ing through the gate pleading for a shoe box and the sight of a woman holding her baby, crying, have left an indelible mark on the teenager. Burtch also remembers a heartfelt event at the medical clinic where she was told to let only one more person through. An older woman was given the nod but the Nicaraguan native handed her privi lege off to a young girl afflicted with arthritis. "The elderly woman's charity amazed me, that she gave it despite her poverty." It is very likely the old woman has never been to a doctor. For Burtch, who had a series of inoculations before head ing to the Third World country, the imbal ance is striking. She is fully aware that the lifestyle common for Canadians is among the minority. " More than half of the people in the world know poverty like they do in Nicaragua." Canadians, unlike those in less-fortunate countries, are blessed with warm water for showers, clean water for brush ing teeth daily and hand washing, a vari ety of food as close as the refrigerator door, an education that is considered a right and.Jightbulbs. The simplicity of turning on a light is an effort in Nicaragua she discovered. While sleeping on a church basement floor in Sabana Grande, one bare bulb hung precariously overhead. It was brought in especially for Burtch and her fellow youths and was powered by a line strung from a lone street lamp. Although Burtch didn't know the other Canadian students from Youth Beyond Borders, she was grateful for their presence. " It wasn't hard to adjust to all that we'd seen, heard and felt, because the others were going through it all at the same time." At home it's a different story.
