The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e sd a y F e b ru a ry 5, 2003 - D3 Oakville Curling Club team edged out in playoff game An Oakville Curling Club team was edged out of the run ning at the Nokia Cup provincial men's curling champi onship with a close 6-5 playoff loss on Friday afternoon to the Peter Corner rink. Oakville had finished third in the preliminary round with a 6-3 record while the Corner rink finished fourth at 5-4 (winning a fourth place tiebreaker 9-3 over Gary Grant). The John Morris rink finished in second place at 7-2 while the Bryan Cochrane rink finished in first place at 8-1. The other Friday playoff game, under the page playoff format, had Team Cochrane gaining a bye to the Sunday final with a 6-5 win over the Morris rink (which went into Saturday's semifinal). The Comer rink went on to upset John Morris 8-5 in the semifinal game but lost 11-8 in the championship game to Bryan Cochrane. The first-place Cochrane team lost only one game throughout the Nokia Cup, held last week at the Hershcy Centre in Mississauga, ironically in the preliminary round to the Oakville rink. The O akville Curling Club was represented by Oakville native John Base. A former world junior champion, the O akville resident was making his I Ith appearance at the provincials. But this one was a bit different as he handed skipping duties over to former Olym pic silver medalist Mike Harris. Other teammates include Phil Loevenmark and Trevor W all. Harris was making a comeback after a two-year lay off because of a back injury. "Considering I've hardly played for the last two years, we didn't do too bad," Harris said. Come-from-behind win gives Oakville stranglehold on playoff series The Oakville Rangers peewee AAA rep team earned a gritty come-from-behind 5-3 win on the road on Monday over the Brampton Battalion. Oakville has two wins and a tie in the bestof-five series. Oakville had to fight back from deficits of 1-0 and 3-1. Eleven players figured in the scoring. Goals were scored by Tyler Stothers (2), Steven Guzzo (2) and Mark Borcsok. Assists went to Scott Benzoni (2), Patrick Readshaw (2). Jonathan Brand. Andrew Neuwald, Adam DiMarco, Spencer Metcalfe. Grant Kozlik and Matthew Lorito. At home on Thursday night, Oakville shut out the visiting Brampton Battalion 2-0. Both goaltenders played very well in a game that could have had high numbers on both sides. The Oakville goals came on similar plays when an alert Tyler Stothers spotted Patrick Marsh cruising in open ice then feeding breakaway passes for the only tallies. Matt Lorito also assisted on the second goal. The first game was drawn 3-3 (already recapped in the Beaver). Good start to second round 0MHA series with 5-4 win over Ancaster The Oakville Rangers m inor bantam AA rep team, sponsored by JN L International Consulting, kicked off their second round of their Ontario Minor Hockey Association (O M H A ) playdowns by defeating the Ancaster Avalanche 5-4. As in the earlier round, the team outshot, outworked, outhit and outhustled in the first period. Cedric Soubry was fired up from the first drop and pounded both Avalanche and the puck ail night long. Dundas took the first and third games of the series by scores of 5-3 and 3-2, while the Rangers dominated games two and four at home, winning convincingly. 5-2 and 4-0. It's as far as the Silver Stick competition goes at this age group, unfortunately, for these boys, who also missed out on the North American finals last year because of the new age divisions instituted for this season. Carson Jenkin scored the game's only goal in the second period, assisted by Chris Hunt and James Albrecht. Oakville also won the semifinal game by the same 1-0 score, this time Eric Murray nab bing the lone goal of the game in the second period, assisted by Carson Jenkin and Chris Hunt. The Oakville Wranglers team went into the 12-team Stayner Cyclones house league tourna ment expecting a fun filled expe rience and they were not disap pointed. The Wranglers played exceptionally well in all aspects of their game as they outscored the competition by a combined score of 28-5.
