The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e s d a y M a y 15, 2 00 2 - D 5 n; st iiii u; i, It's clean-up time again! Time to wash the dirt and grime of winter off your car so it will look better... and last longer! Sure, you can wheel it into the nearest full-service car wash, but by following a few simple steps you can do a professional-looking job yourself. CARSTAR offers the following tips for drivers preparing their vehicles for Spring: Clean Your C ar Inside and Out Dashboards Apply protectant with an applica tor or rag and avoid spraying directly on the dash. Use a vinyl protectant regularly to prevent fading and cracking. Upholstery Vacuum regularly to remove dirt, leaves and other items that can damage carpets and mats. Leather interiors should be cleaned with leather products that are designed to penetrate the pores. For leather, avoid high-alkaline content that can bleach the colour. Use only upholstery cleaners designed for cars, not household clean ers. Exterior Remove leaves from your car as soon as possible to prevent the release of chemical's that can permanently stain your finish. Avoid parking under trees that release sap. Or, to remove sap, use soap and hot water. If surface containment won't come off with normal washing, stop in and see your local CARSTAR store for recommendations. Remove bird droppings immedi ately, which can cause harm to the paint finish. Car Washes Avoid brush-style car washes as they cause dirt to scratch the car's fin ish. Use the lowest setting in do-ityourself car washes to avoid "blasting" grit into the car's finish. Prevent & Protect this Spring Vacuum out air cleaner housing and wipe with a damp rag before OAKVI LLE Be prepared for warmer weather with car maintenance tips installing a new air filter to keep dirt out of engine and maximize filter life & fuel efficiency. Check battery fluid regularly especially if your battery is more than two years old. Periodically check tension on drive belts to ensure they do not give more than half an inch. Lubricate door hinges, door latch es and hood hinges periodically. Check tire inflation once a month to maximize fuel efficiency and avoid accidents from under-inflated tires. Change your windshield wipers at least once a year. Flush dirt, bugs and leaves from the front of your radiator with a brush and garden hose to prevent cooling sys tem problems. A word of caution from the experts - don't clean the bodywork in direct sunlight, which can cause ugly blotch ing. Wash a section of the bodywork at a time and keep rinsing as you go. Follow these steps and your car will be the envy of the neighbourhood. Many things come along with the arrival of spring - warm weather, spring cleaning and home renovating. One thing that many people forget after the long winter is gearing up their car for the spring season.
