The girls won their only home gam e and tied their three out o f town games. The goalkeeping duo o f Pam Newman and H eather Garbutt and the defensive unit o f Kristen Yee Loong. Em m a H obson, Jenna Tiffen. Stephanie Latty and Laura losue were solid, keeping the team in contention until the offence clicked. H ere's a recap: O akville 1, Barrie 1: Amy Cornell scored the lone goal, Stephanie Latty picked up the assist. Oakville 3, O shawa 3: goals were scored by Danielle Bernier. Rachel Valiance and Sarah Agozzino. Assists went to Emma Hobson. Jenna Tiffen and Amy Cornell. Oakville 4, Brampton I : in their only home game so far this year, the H ornets recorded a decisive win. O akville 2, Peterborough 2: back on the road again Oakville worked hard to earn a point from a chippy Peterborough team. Danielle Bernier scored both goals. The Sheridan Bruins men's basket ball team is looking to win another Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) basketball championship. Only this time, they look to do it on home court. This year, for the first time in more than a decade, the event is being host ed by Sheridan College, which means you can come out and cheer on the Bruins, as they gun for their fifth championship in six years. The tournament runs Thursday through Saturday (March 6-8), and will feature Ontario's top eight teams, all gunning for an automatic berth into the nationals, which will be held in Montreal. College basketball is widely regarded as being every bit as com petitive as university basketball. In fact, over the past few years, OCAA teams have defeated some lowerranked NCAA teams. According to Bruins head coach Jim Flack, those who come out to support the team won't be disappoint ed. "Its four or five bucks to get in, and I guarantee that everybody would be just as entertained as if they had spent $120 to go downtown and eat stale popcorn at a Raptors game," said Flack. Fans not only get treated to topnotch basketball, but they also get a chance to leave with a wad of cash. Each game, some lucky fans will get to participate in a $5,000 shoot-for- cash, with Saturday's gold medal game featuring a $25,000 shoot-forcash. The Bruins finished the regular season 13-2, the same record as last year. Both losses came to the power ful Humber Hawks who were 14-1, their only loss to Sheridan. But Flack won't worry about them - yet. He doesn't want to overlook their first round opponent, the 8-4 Lambton Lions. The Lions possess a star player in Chris W illiams, who at almost 22 points per game finished third in league scoring. W hile Sheridan didn't have a play er finish in the top-20 in league scor ing -- forward Jordan Morrison ranked 21st, with 14.5 points per game -- they have a very well-round ed team that gets balanced scoring from players like Morrison and for ward Kevin Dennis. Flack has been impressed with these players, along with the improved play from David Martin and Terill Bynoe. but says the team needs to continue to get better. "We've had a lot o f good perform ances, but good performances don't win cham pionships - we need excel lence." Nevertheless, Flack is confident his team has what it takes to win. The Hornets won their first leg against Mississauga and now will play Halton Hills this Thursday/Friday to deter mine which team advances. OAKVILLE 4, Mississauga Chiefs 2: Oakville blazed out to leads of 3-0 and 4-1 against their hosts. Brittany Parkyn scored a pair o f goals with singles added by Missy Kennedy and Justine Bernier. (Stoney Creek tourney) The Hornets had a tough ouster in the semifinals at the Stoney Creek Tournament over the Feb. 14-16 weekend. The Hornets lost 3-0 to the Etobicoke Dolphins, the final goal going into an empty net with just three seconds remain ing. The two teams were scoreless throughout two periods. Here's a recap o f the preliminary round: Mississauga Chiefs 2, Oakville 1: Oakville tied the game up in the third period on a goal by Missy Kennedy, assisted by Tenille Clarke, but Mississauga potted the winner with only 18 seconds left in the game. Oakville 3, Hamilton Hawks 2: Oakville kept their play off hopes alive by clawing back from a 2-0 deficit, including two late goals with the extra attacker. Both were scored by Katy Hughes in wild goalmouth scrambles. Megan Wanless opened the scoring for Oakville. Assists went to Katy Hughes, Erin Mitzel, Tenille Clarke and Missy Kennedy. Oakville 6, Stoney Creek Sabres 2: Stoney Creek opened the scoring but Oakville roared back with three straight. A win and a tie in opening round provincial playdown action There's nothing like saving the best for last in a hockey season - just ask anyone on the Oakville Hornets peewee BB rep team. Over the second half of its season in the North Metro Girls Hockey League, Hornets soared from 10th place (among 12 teams) to fifth over-all, com pleting the season as the top peewee BB team in the North Metro loop, and capable of overtaking each of the division's four A teams. After posting a .460 winning percentage in their first 12 games, the BB team amassed an impressive .750 in the final half (7 wins. I loss, four ties), for an over-all .604 record. "Starting out, we set a goal of being a .500 team in seasonal play. But there's one thing better than meeting your goals, and that's exceeding them," said Hornets peewee BB coach Peter May. "Practice is paying off, the team is playing strong defensively, the offensive potential is being realized, and we are positioned to get even stronger as we prepare for North Metro playoffs as well as Provincials play."
