Oakville Sports Briefs Oakville resident Mike Hanson has been reacquired by the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League in the league's pre-playoff North American draft last Tuesday. Hanson, a 24-year-old native of Oakville, played four years of major junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League, finishing with a 58-point sea son, on 28 goals and 30 assists, for the Windsor Spitfires in 1998-99. Following the season, he joined the Mallards in the playoffs, playing in eight games, firing ten shots on goal, and being assessed 21 penalty minutes. Hanson then returned to Canada and competed for four seasons for St. Thomas University in Fredericton. New Brunswick. He completed his senior season with 39 points, on 16 goals and 23 assists, in 28 games. He was expect ed to join the Mallards last Wednesday. The Oakville Longhorns who have won the last three Canadian Senior Football League (C SF L) championships and the last 10 Northern Football Conference (N FC ) championships will sport a new head coach for the upcom ing season. Patrick McNemey will take over the reigns, along with C F L veteran Keith Costello as well as several returning coaches -- Bruce Gilroy. Lome Henry, Selwyn Daniel and Dennis Griffin. " At this time we would thank coach Tony Molnar for two back to back unde feated seasons along with three consec utive C S F L championships." said `Horns president and player Karl Kustor. He said Molnar's " dedication and passion for the game will certainly be missed. Now you may relax and be our number #1 fan. Thank you for all you have done and accomplished for our organization." McNemey will be welcomed at a Thursday night press conference. Bantam AAA's settle for unofficial conference title The Oakville Rangers bantam A A A rep team, sponsored by DIVAD O X. played ip the O M H A championships in Whitby last weekend. They were the only A A A rep team from Oakville to earn their way to the O M H A championships this season which they did by beating Halton and Grey-Bruce. In Whitby, the standard of competition was of the very highest quality and the Rangers did well to get to the bronze medal game, where they narrowly went down 3-1 to the host team. Whitby, last year's O M H A champions. The championship this year was won by York-Simcoe. who upset heavily favored Richmond Hill 2-0. In the round robin section, the Rangers were in tough, and breaks were very difficult to come by. Here's a recap: York-Simcoe 7. Oakville 3: Oakville opened the game on an early power play on a point shot by Luke Moodie. but YorkSimcoe came back to lead 5-1 by the end of two. The Rangers were shell shocked but played much stronger in the third peri od on goals by Jason Bergeron and Anthony Gomes. Assists went to Bergeron, Brian Richardson, Chris Haltigin and Michael Topic. Despite the score, Rangers goalie Chris W ills had a terrific game, stopping no fewer than 35 shots. Also, the Rangers fighting spirit was shown by their captain. Richardson, who badly bruised his ribs blocking a puck on a slap shot. Despite what would have put most players out for the tournament, he came back right from a hospital check-up to lead his team in the next game. Whitby 4, Oakville 0: a spirited effort in the third period was too late to change the one-way tide. Oakville 2, Hamilton 1: Jason Bergeron scored with just 4.7 second left in the game to give Oakville the unofficial con ference championship over their conference rival. Scott Hamel had given Oakville an early 1-0 lead. Mikek each having already locked up a berth into Sunday's gold medal game, with a penalty-filled 3-3 tie. In Sunday's much anticipated gold medal game, the Bulldogs took the initiative, scoring just 38 seconds into the game. After killing off an early power play, the Rangers picked up the pace offensively but couldn't capitalize in the early going as forward Jordy M cM illan had a couple of golden opportunities from in close, as did Daniel Hannigan Daley from the slot. Another golden opportunity for the Rangers came half way through the first period, when Je ff Bentley showed his strength by muscling a defenceman off the puck before missing by inches on the wraparound. "It can be tough when you're playing at home because of the pressure," said Oakville coach Shawn Hudson. "I just told them to keep shooting, while playing physi cal and focus on the things we can control on the ice." With under two minutes remaining in a physical first period. Josh Smyth, gave the Oakville fans reason to whoop it up. as he sniped a low shot for the tying goal, after some great cycling work down low from Steve Turner and Marc Richardson. "H e's a quiet leader, with gifted hands," said coach Hudson. In the opening minutes of the second period, before fans had a chance to get comfortable in their seats, Hamilton scored to make it 2-1 before getting into penalty trouble. The Rangers' best chance at tying the game with the man advantage came when forward Jordy M cM illan had two chances, but couldn't execute from the slot. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 3-1 with less than one minute remaining in the second period. The Bulldogs survived an early third period onslaught by the Rangers, before widening their lead to 4-1 on a power play goal. Thoughts of a possible comeback were in the air late in the third, when the Rangers A1 Lee scored on a sizzling slap shot to make it 4-2 and set up a frenzy of a finish. With valuable seconds ticking off the clock, the Rangers who once again were moving the puck well and pressuring, couldn't get any closer. With 1 1 seconds left on the clock, Hamilton scored in an open net for the final 5-2 verdict. "The nucleus for next year's team is very strong," said coach Hudson who is off to pursue a tier two junior coach-, ing position. "The players have really improved, and should be really proud."
