The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 19, 2003 - A7 LETTERS Til Till: KIIITIIi: Letter was `naive and offensive' In his letter to the editor on March 5, Chris Stoate, president of TrafalgarChartwell Residents Association, makes several statements that are both naive and offensive. First, he states that perhaps " .. .a bet ter outcome would have been achieved for Oakville had OPA 1 98 been passed in time to avoid the developers' appeals." It is very disturbing to think that Mr. Stoate could be president of a residents' association and yet be so naive as to believe that developers' appeals to the Ontario Municipal Board (O M B ) could have been avoided regardless of when OPA 198 was passed. The mayor herself said several times that OPA 198 would be going to the O M B no matter what. If avoiding the O M B is your top pri ority, Mr. Stoate. then perhaps in the next election we should simply elect a slate of developers to sit on town coun cil. In his letter. Mr. Stoate also states " it remains to be seen whether the constant recycling of the same demands, which resulted in the delay, won't in the end have done more harm than good." It makes me very concerned to hear the president of a residents' association speak out so boldly against public input into a major community decision. Recall. Mr. Stoate. that the number of residents who wanted to speak against OPA 198 was so large that it took many evenings to hear them all. Yes. many did echo the same concerns. They worried about what urbanizing 7,600 acres of countryside would do to Oakville's air, water, traffic, creeks, wildlife, quality of life. Valid concerns. These issues remain a concern and are therefore still being discussed. Your statement seems to suggest that the hundreds of people who took time to prepare comments and present them to council would have served the commu nity better by staying quiet. Interesting. As one of the many people who took the time to speak up about Oakville's growth plan. I am deeply offended by your comments. I am sure others who spoke up are too. Some of them proba bly live in the Chartwell area. MOIRA E.
