A customer of a landscaping business, which is also on the property, called 911 and reported the blaze shortly after 1:30 p.m. One person, who was home at the time, escaped with no injuries. The Oakville Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. Halton police and Halton EMS were also present. Oakville Fire Chief Lee Grant said a pot that was left on the stove too long caused the kitchen fire. He also estimated that repairs to the kitchen and smoke damage to the rest of the residence would cost around $25,000. A plaque on the home states it was built in 1847 and belonged to George Marlatt, who farmed on the property for 30 years, according to the Town of Oakville's website. "The building is a good example of the Regency style architecture. It is a one-storey, three bay structure, with a low hip roof and large windows. The cornice exhibits fine decorative woodwork. A coach house is also present on the property and is used today as a garage and stable," states the Town's Historical Archive website.
