The three-day event drew more than 60 players from Toronto. Burlington. Hamilton and as far away as Rochester. Toronto's Peter Service captured the men's open title, beating Hamilton's Marco Faiazza in two straight 21-point games. In doubles competition, Toronto's Rick Stybak teamed up with Montreal's Norm Kelly to beat Burlington's Mark Polgrabia and Toronto's Grant Jennings in two games. Burlington's Steve Nowak took top honours in the men's B division, with Hamilton's Zolton Motoz and Mario Palma shining in the men's 70-plus dou bles competition. Handball is the exact same game as racquetball, which it spawned, except players use both hands to hit a smaller, harder ball with a truer bounce. Gloves, similar to baseball batting gloves, are worn mainly to keep the ball dry and offer a bit of protection. Matches are best two out o f three, with the first two games to 21, and an 11 -point tie-breaker, if needed. Points are scored on the serve, with all walls in the court, including the ceil ing and back wall, in play following the serve. The weekend tournament is the cul mination of a winter of Tuesday night handball at the Iroquois Park Road fit ness club. O akville's Ekaterina Shulaeva won the Metro Label U nder-18 Canadian Indoor C ham pionships at the M ayfair Parkway Racquet and Fitness Club. It was Shulaeva's sec ond national title, and her first in the U-18 category. She defeated fourthseed Valierie Saillant of Saint-Lam bert, Quebec 6- indoor nationals 2. 6 -0 . Shulaeva. who trains out o f the ACE Tennis Academy in B urlington, cam e out strong to clinch the victory in straight sets. "I hadn't been playing that well all tournam ent, so 1 tried to com e out with my A-gam e today," said Shulaeva, who was also a finalist in the girls' dou bles on Friday. "Val didn't play as well as she could have, but I played solid and was m en tally tough." Shulaeva jum ped to an early 5-0 lead in the first set before Saillant battled back to win the next two games. But Shulaeva rem ained tough, taking the last seven gam es for the title. Buzz looking for breakthrough season, prepare for next week's home opener After signing three players last week, the Oakville Buzz Jr. B Lacrosse team is aggressively adding to their roster in anticipation of their home opener against Mimico Mountaineers. Friday April 25, 8 p.m. The first game of the season takes place in `the hive' at the Buzz home arena, Maplegrove. Last week's first three player signings, as recounted in last Wednesday's Beaver, were Andrew Kingston, Reid Westmacott and Daren Hockaday. This week, general manager Rob Bajak and head coach Derek Forbes have announced the signing of returning defencemen Geoff Farrer and Craig Henderson, goalie Jason Legree, and, signing his first junior card after graduating from the Oakville Minor Lacrosse midget program, Thomas Metcalf. The players are eager to get the sea son underway. "We have very high expectations this year," remarked Farrer. "The Buzz have paid their dues and nothing less than a solid placing in the regular season and a long play-off run will do this year." Although the Buzz fell just short of making the playoffs last year, Farrer was picked up by the St. Catharine's Spartan team, played in the Founders Cup. and was part of their Ontario Junior B championship team, winning a silver medal. Farrer graduates from Blakelock this year and will head off to Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont California on a full lacrosse and aca demic scholarship in the fall. But before taking his lacrosse expertise south of the border, Farrer has some goals to reach on Canadian soil, at both national and international levels. "My primary focus is getting to the playoffs. I hope to be there with my hometown team, the Buzz. We've got the talent to get to the medal rounds in the Founders Cup Canadian Jr. B Championship this August." His other focus this season is to master the game of inter-crosse, a hybrid of the game of lacrosse. As one of only two players selected by Ontario's Jr. B Council to play on Canada's national team. Farrer will Mike White, last year's general manager, was pleased to select Farrer -- for the second year in a row -- for the club's `Best Defencenian' trophy at last week's annual awards dinner. "Geoff is the ideal can didate to represent the Buzz, the Oakville com munity, and Canada," said White. "I'm pleased he has the opportunity to experience play at the international level and has earned a lacrosse scholarship. I can't think of any player more deserving o f these personal achievements."
