Volunteers encouraged participants en route by announcing how much distance they'd already covered and the pathway leading to the nish line was chalked up with the words `Thank you'. Of cials were pleased with the turnout and Damoff took time to tip her hat to Team Darrell and Team Oakville Hydro for their ongoing fundraising efforts, as well as one couple, known only by their rst names, who raised $15,000 online for this walk alone. Damoff also welcomed Todd Courage, who, along with his brother Trent and the Courage Distributing team, were supporting the event. The brothers are known for their own Courage Polar Bear Dip at New Year's, which raised funds for water projects in needy countries around the world. Todd Courage also learned, after jumping in to support this year's walk, that he was diagnosed with cancer. All present were there, some wearing Terry Fox Run T-shirts, others sporting Canada ags, to ght cancer. | photos by Michael Ivanin special to the Beaver he sun shone as thousands turned out for the annual Oakville Terry Fox Run at Coronation Park Sunday morning, helping the event reach a fundraising record. The Oakville Terry Fox Run raised $125,000 for cancer research. "More people attended than I ever remember seeing," said run chair and Ward 2 Councillor Pam Damoff. The event began with registration at 9 a.m. and the walk/run/jog/ride/cycle and more got underway at 10 a.m. This year's event featured two-kilometre, ve-kilometre and 10-kilometre options and were bicycle, inline skating and wheelchair accessible. Following O Canada and an of cial ceremony that included words of welcome from Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn and Damoff, participants were off to the strains of bagpipe music. They followed a circuitous route that wound past numerous signs erected in memory of someone lost to or battling cancer and carried on to Bronte Harbour and back again. The 2014 annual Oakville Terry Fox Run drew record numbers and raised a record $125,000 for cancer research.
