Oakville residents looking to meet with candidates for council and the mayor's seat will have an opportunity on Oct. 5 at a all-candidates meeting hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Advance voting runs from Oct. 6-17 at locations throughout Oakville. The municipal election is set for Oct. 27. Less than a week after nomination closed for the upcoming Oct. 27 municipal election, incumbent mayoral candidate Rob Burton held a press conference Tuesday to announce his preferred roster of candidates for the next Town council. Echoing his campaign platform, Burton endorsed all incumbent councillors along with the Halton regional chair and boldly asked residents take heed. While the move drew all incumbent candidates to the press conference at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Bronte -- except Pam Damoff who said she was unable to attend -- it also quickly drew the ire of at least one municipal candidate who is not an incumbent. "The voters would be best advised to go with the experience that they can trust, and the service that they've relied on, and that's these peo- ple," said Burton, who is seeking his third consecutive term as chief magistrate. However within hours of the conference, Ward 5 Town council candidate Linda Nazareth said it is "hardly clear that this is the best thing for Oakville. "I am disturbed that Mr. Burton thinks that this election should just be about rubber-stamping a council and an agenda with whom he feels comfortable," she said. "Too often incumbents -- whatever their level of competence -- are re-elected simply because voters know little about other candidates." An economist, author and Business News Network broadcaster, Nazareth pointed out that the current council, including the mayor and Halton chair seats, are positions mostly held by men. "Oakville has a municipal slate that is 86 per cent male, and we have a mayor that is urging voters to not change a thing," she said. Burton touted his colleagues' contributions to the Town and Region's growth plans, and said they are "poised to continue to roll out the vision. "I believe that if voters are voting for me and the Livable Oakville program I'm associated with, they should vote for the people who helped create that vision, and that's these people here," Burton said, adding that together they've brought tax increases under control and invest- ed in transportation. Nominations for those seeking to run in next month's election closed Friday with a total of 68 candidates for council and the school boards now on the campaign trail, a half dozen more than in 2010. The municipal election is set for Oct. 27.
