Former federal lawyer John McLaughlin wasted no time during his opening remarks of the 90-minute debate at the Oakville Conference Centre in attacking incumbent Rob Burton over what he describes as the current mayor's so-called "doublespeak." "I'm running to end eight years of failed leadership. That's by Mr. Burton if you don't know that. Failed policies, scal mismanagement and doublespeak," McLaughlin said, turning to point at the mayor on several occasions. Burton, meanwhile, stuck to familiar talking points, never rebutting the comments thrown his way by fellow candidates, but instead sticking to many of the highlights of last week's state of the town address.
