The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday July 10, 2002 - A 5 Break-ins lead to grow houses Police seize plants, equipment Halton Regional Police officers responding to a pair of daytime break-ins Friday stumbled upon two flourishing mar ijuana growing operations. * Around 1 p.m., patrol officers received two separate calls reporting that unidentified suspects had broken into houses in the northeast area of Oakville. When the officers arrived at each of the residences they discovered marijuana grow oper ations. In one house, officers seized 176 plants with a poten tial street value of $ 176,000 and $6,000 worth of equipment. At the second house, officers found 446 plants with a potential value of $446,000. Officers also found at this house the hydro meter had been bypassed. Enrico Aiello, 36, of Elizabeth Street, is charged with pro ducing a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He is scheduled to appear in Oakville Court on Aug. 27. The Halton Regional Police #2 District Break and Enter team is conducting the investigation to find the suspects responsible for the house entries, while the Drug and Morality Bureau continues to follow-up with the investigation into the grow operations. The discoveries bring the total of grow houses shut down in Halton so far this year to 26 -- 17 of them in Oakville. On Thursday -- the day before Friday's seizures -- Drug and Morality Bureau members, along with #2 District Street Crime Unit and uniformed officers executed a search warrant at a Clearview Drive residence. There they found a large-scale marijuana growing opera tion powered by electricity stolen through a hydro meter bypass. A total of 1,657 marijuana plants with a street value of $1.6 million were seized, along with $15,000 worth of hydroponics equipment. No one was home at the time of the bust but the police investigation continues. Anyone with information about a suspected grow opera tion is encouraged to call police at 905-825-4777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. > ^ f H u r r y in c ^ B e s t S e le i % F IN A No paym ents for 90 days! 1NG Peter C.McCusker · Oakville Beaver M M M GOOD: The ice cream didn't last long in the weekend heat so Anne King of the Halton VON ate it quickly at the Strawberry Social for VON clients hosted Sunday by the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar. The accident happened around 6 a.m. when a passing motorist noticed a critically injured horse standing on the roadside. Police, Animal Control officers and the owner of the horse were summoned to the scene. An investigation revealed that a burgundy coloured car, possibly travelling southbound on Ninth Line, had struck the animal. The car, say police, will have damage to the passenger side and will be missing the passenger side mirror. The car's driv er left the scene and did not report the collision. Due to the serious nature of the injuries sustained, the horse was euthanized at the scene. Police are reminding drivers of their responsibility to con tact them when an incident involving a collision or damage to their car or other property occurs. As a result, the police can ensure that no hazard remains on the roadway causing problems for other drivers. Whatever the area of study, Cheatley said growth plans will involve all of council noting it is vital the public sector is seen "initiating, directing and making the final decisions on planning." "In this way, criticism that the findings of the study were biased in favour of the party funding the study can be avoid ed," said Cheatley. "This will assist in promoting trust and credibility." To that end, Cheatley reported the Stakeholders Advisory Committee and roundtable discussions have proven to be very useful in obtaining "informed input," communicating with residents and stimulating public debate. The Web site focus ing on Official Plan Amendment 198 has also been well used. "The next phase of work should continue to actively and meaningfully engage the public," reported Cheatley, who added that, in addition to consensus building, a "broad com munications strategy" should be implemented to keep public stakeholders informed and involved. Neither suffered seri ous injuries. , The pilot said he thinks the engine probably stalled because of humidity causing ice to build up on its carburetor. There was minimal body damage caused by impact. He said mechanics at Toronto's island airport were inspecting the plane's engine Monday to determine an exact cause. Redelinghuys said he'll likely keep both feet on the ground for a while but does see a time in the near future when he'll fly again. "My wife has grounded me," he said. "But I think I would be willing to fly again. I might get into float planes," he joked. As for the puppy, Redelinghuys said his wife and tw'o chil dren drove to Peterborough Monday to pick it up. ______________ Robb Swybrvus can be reached at rswxbrous @haltonsearch. com. 70% OFF select items July 22 July 30 Aug. 6 hurry in for best selection! visit us in store or online at www.pleasemum.com Aug. 12 Aug. 19 Stuart Little 2 Movie IMAX - Space FOR REGISTRATION INFORMATION CALL (905) 338-4250 H a it o n L in e n O u t l e t 1225 TRAFALGAR ROAD · OAKVILLE, ONTARIO · L6J 5A6 (9 0 5 ) 8 4 5 -6 6 0 1 S E W IN G M A C H IN E ST O R E REPAIRS TO SIN G ER a n d a l l o t h e r m a k e s d r m o d e ls E X PE R T P IN K IN G SH EA R S & S C IS S O R S H A R P E N IN G Voted O akville's Best Linen Shop 198 SPEERS R D . 9 0 5 -8 4 2 -2 0 3 3 Inside O ak v ille V acuum / LAFARGE NO RTH AMERICA 1ST III PERFORMANCE CONCRETE for the hom eow ner's outdoor needs 481 North Service Rd.
