Concerns range from growth and traffic to taxes and transit continued from p.4 "I'm not sure having a councillor as the representative (on the GTAA), if they don't have the same depth of skill set as some of the members appointed by other Regions, will actually advocate effectively for us," Mulvale said, noting the Region's current interview process of selecting the best candidate. Regional candidate Hugh Boyd said he'd contacted the mayor in the past on an "innovative plan on how we should approach this issue" of air traffic and feels Halton needs representation on CENAC. "I also suggested (to the mayor) there are other groups in the area that have similar issues as Oakville does," Boyd said, adding he's "been watching this issue for a long time now because it directly impacts where I live." Knoll and Marc Grant both alluded to an announcement forthcoming from the Town. Thursday, incumbent mayoral candidate Rob Burton, who'd been at the Ward 3 all-candidates' meeting as it had included mayoral candidates' while the Ward 5 debate did not, announced a Mayor's Advisory Group (MAG) to study air traffic noise over north Oakville. "Although it passes over all of north Oakville, the impact appears to be greatest on Ward 5 because of the way the river valley seems to echo the noise up into that neighbourhood," said Burton, who named Knoll chair of the group of north Oakville councillors. According to a release issued Thursday by Bur- 9 | Friday, October 10, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com VOTE 2014 ton, during a meeting with the mayor late last month, Nav Canada expressed an openness to consider developing mitigations to the flight path changes it implemented at Pearson International Airport in 2012. Tuesday night's debate also provided voters with the opportunity to hear from the five candidates vying for the position of local councillor for Ward 5. Incumbent Marc Grant and candidates Ibrahim Daniyal, Del McIntee, Linda Nazareth and Bob Seccaspina discussed growth and infrastructure, traffic congestion and bike lanes. The Town is undertaking a first-of-its-kind transportation study in College Park to look at how people move through the community. If successful, it could be rolled out to River Oaks in the future, Grant said. "We're making sure that people come together and talk about how they try to get safely from one place to another," Grant said. "Transit is the way of solving our gridlock problem and making sure that we can get from place to place easily." Daniyal said he'd like to see more cycling lanes built in the ward as a transportation alternative for commuters. "There should be a mandate on the developers that in new development cycling lanes should be there," he said, noting the potential for building lanes down to the GO Station. Seccaspina said his main priorities are sustainability, accessibility and accountability. "My priority will be to fix traffic congestion and manage uncontrolled sprawl," he said. "A direct correlation of this gridlock is unmanaged growth." McIntee said he'd like to involve Ward 5 in the growth of north Oakville, and address concerns on traffic flow and noise on Dundas Street. "I would like to see the people consulted more," McIntee said, adding he'd ensure "the employment areas maintained as employment areas, and not new housing developments." Linda Nazareth said her priorities are "respecting tax dollars" as well as property values. An economist, Nazareth said from 2009-13, the average household in Oakville is paying 20 per cent more in taxes, and the size of govern- ment has resulted in a 23 per cent increase in salaries and benefits for Town employees. "That is not money that is serving you well," she said. "Let's not talk about keeping tax increases down, let's talk about cutting taxes or at least spending effectively." Nazareth also said if elected, she'd keep a blog of issues at Town council, and "not a Facebook page with people grinning at barbecues." In one of the last questions of the evening, Grant addressed the unease amongst candidates and the electorate over the mayor's endorsement of council in the early days of the campaign. "We got the endorsement, I don't agree with the way it came out, but I'm not going to dissuade anybody from saying it's a bad thing," Grant said. "It's good that somebody who I disagree with has come out and said that they agree that I've been doing a good job." Every quote comes with a handshake. Real local people. Real local service.
