Saturday's third annual Dream-a-thon hosted by the Oakville Field Hockey Club (OFHC) was a swining suc cess. The event raises money for Dreams Take Flight which helps terminally ill and disabled children in real izing their dream of a visit to Disney World in Florida Included in the field hock ey marathon held at the Queen Elizabeth Park School gym were players of all ages, genders and skill levels. Highlighting the day was the celebrity match between the Oakville fire fighters and Halton police, most of whom picked up the intricate rules for the first time in a quick briefing before the match. Downtown Oakville Constable, Tara Suttady who had never played the game before, made a few goal-saving slides to help the police down the firefighters 18-11. "It is a lot of fun and great exercise for us, and it is for a great cause so you can't get a better combination," Suttady said. Also making a celebrity appearance and demonstrat ing how field hockey is real ly played was C anada's National Field Hockey Team. Team members Ranjeed Deol and Inderjit and Jeewanjot Bath grew up exposed to the sport predom inantly viewed as female in Canada. "I got involved through family. My dad played in the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics," said Deol. Deol himself was the last cut from the Canadian team that travelled to the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He along with the Bath brothers are now gearing up for the 2004 Olympics in Athens and are preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, this July. This year's Dream-a-thon was hailed a great success by all involved. Hats (shinpads and mouthguards) go off to the Oakville Field Hockey Club once again.
