Fresh off her triumph in helping the Canadian women's national hockey team to a gold medal over the United States, Therese Brisson is set to arrive home on Friday, and to suit up for her Ice Bears team at Ice Sports on Saturday night. The Ice Bears, who play in the National W omen's Hockey League, are based out of M ississauga but have quite an Oakville connection. They're owned by Bill Metcalfe, head coach is Steve Blundy and the assistant coach is Gary Carr, Oakville MPP and speaker o f the house -- all of Oakville. They have always played at least one game of their schedule in Oakville and it's a great coincidence that their next Oakville date will include the first post Olympic appearance o f their Olympian, Therese Brisson. Fittingly, the game is one rescheduled from earlier in the season, due to Olympic preparation commitments for a number of the players. Metcalfe said he has talked to Brisson by cell phone in Salt Lake. (in s e le c te d a re a s ) Huge hoops tourney in town this weekend In a few short years, the Oakville Vytis basketball program has exploded both in the number of teams it offers and in the provincial rankings. This weekend, the club will break out with a huge tournament featuring 80 teams from across the province -- from Windsor to Ottawa and most places, in between. The tournament kicks off Friday. 6 p.m. and continues all day Saturday and Sunday at 10 Oakville schools. Divisions range from atom (10 years of age) to juvenile (18 years of age). There are six girls and three boys divisions. Vytis is entering 10 teams. For the girls, Vytis will field one team each in juvenile AAA, midget AAA, bantam AAA, minor bantam AAA and atom; and two teams in ban tam AA. For the boys, Vytis will field one team each in bantam boys AA, minor bantam AA and minor bantam A. The Oakville Double Blue basketball program is entered in bantam boys AA. t io M E S H Q VF Ca n a d a m m m Eighth place midgets shock first place Brampton The Oakville Rangers midget AAA rep team are on a playoff roll, winning their first two Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) playoff series. Their next opponent is Burlington. The series opens in Burlington today (Wednesday) with the second game at Oakville Arena on Friday (March 1), 8 p.m. Oakville finished out the regular season in eighth place with an 11-15-5 record, forcing them to play a preliminary round series against Grey Bruce which Oakville swept. Oakville then shocked league leading Brampton by fight ing back from a 2-0 deficit to win the series 3-2, including their first two wins in overtime. Here's the recap. goal. Kelly Veitch with two goals and an assist and Jeff Vaive with one goal and an assist in regulation time, led the way. Rob Stein also notched a sin gle. Other assists went to Josh Smyth (2), Jeff Bentley and Chris Veitch. With 2:40 left in overtime, Steve Turner broke loose and scored the winner as the Rangers evened the series. Setting up the winning goal was Brock Pawliw and Stein. Oakville 4, Brampton 3: while Canada was preparing for their big game, the midget AAA's were doing the same as they traveled to Memorial for game five on Sunday. Oakville came out flying in the first period, opening a two-goal lead. In the second period, Oakville was on their heels the entire period as Brampton evened the scored before the break. In the third period, the Rangers scored twice, deflating the home team. A late goal by Brampton was not enough as Oakville prevailed 4 -3 to win the series. Leading the way were Steve Turner with two goals, Brock Pawliw with one goal and two assists and A1 Lee with a single marker. Other helpers went to Rob Stein (2), Tyler Legein and Chris Veitch.
