As M anager of Leadership and the Tomorrow Fund. Solomon challenged herself and UWO supporters to `go the extra mile' for the Pacesetter Challenge - a fundraising initia tive whereby donors supported her participa tion in the July 27 Lake Placid Ironman. The result is $107,432 in leadership dona tions - gifts of $1,000 or more - raised from Solomon's first Ironman competition. Solomon, an avid runner, added swimming and cycling to her training regimen. She com pleted the Lake Placid Ironman with a time of 12 hours, 18 minutes and 15 seconds - more than 10 minutes faster than her desired time and well within the 17-hour limit she was given. She swam 3.8 kilometres, cycled 180 kilo metres and ran 42.2 kilometres and was 14 minutes and six spots shy of a spot in her age division, 30-34, for the coveted Hawaii Ironman held annually in October. She is moti vated to compete in future Ironman events. (Solomon was one of 11 Oakville athletes and the only woman - to compete in the Lake through the hilly part o f the course." "The only reason I didn't quit was because I thought o f the people who were backing me up." Her backers included UWO supporters who helped her surpass her own goal of raising $50,000. "I more than doubled my goal and surpassed, by $30,000, Tony Gabriel's goal of $77,000." Gabriel, U W O 's Workplace Leadership Chair who set the $77,000 goal for Solomon, wore No. 77 during his colourful football career. Her new goal is to raise $1 million in leadership donations. For Solomon, the Ironman was a metaphor for life. "The race represented life itself," she said. "You never know what's going to happen, what mishaps and experiences life is going to throw at you." She compared the experience of dealing with the broken bicycle cleat and stopping at the first aid tent for duct tape with clients who come to UWO-funded agencies for help to overcome their difficulties. The people who use UWO agencies to get over the rough spots encouraged and inspired me to continue, to realize that life is what you make it. "You take your life experiences and move forward, pushing yourself to get over the bumps in life, like losing the use of that pedal. "In a 12-hour event, that was a huge problem, and can make or break a race. "Life's challenges can have a big effect on your life and you just leam to deal with it.
