Apartment fire leaves mother homeless By Craig MacBride S P E C IA L T O T H E BEAVER A Hixon Street fire has left windows of a two-storey apartment building boarded up. a cat and a bird dead, a dog injured and one tenant and her monthold baby homeless. Passersby called the Oakville Fire Department at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, and six units were dispatched. The fire was contained to one of the six units in the building, although the second floor and basement apartments suffered water and smoke damage. No one was in the apartment when the fire started, and Deputy Chief John deHooge says the fire, which originated in the kitchen and spread throughout the apartment, may have been caused by a dysfunctional refrigerator. Damage was estimated at $75,000, said deHooge. The tenant, whose name has not been released, did not have contents insur ance. Representatives from the Oakville Red Cross Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) program responded to the fire scene and looked after the tenant and her month-old baby, whose apartment was destroyed, as well as the tenants from the smoke-damaged apartment. Short-term housing was arranged for the tenants. "It was primarily a need for a shelter. and we got the person into the Holiday Inn," said John Robertson, chair for dis aster services for Oakville Red Cross. "There was also a one month old baby involved, and we got formula for the baby." The PDA has arrangements with numerous companies in the area, includ ing the Holiday Inn, Shopper's Drug Mart and Winners, so they can arrange shelter, medication and clothing, as well as smaller things like toothbrushes for disaster victims. The dog was unconscious when fire fighters pulled it from the apartment, but was resuscitated and transported to the Oakville Humane Society before being taken to a veterinarian. Gas bar robbery suspect caught on camera Halton Regional Police have released a surveillance photograph of a man wanted in connection with the Aug. 5 robbery of a local gas bar. H According to investigators, it was around 11:12 p.m. when a lone male entered the Esso Gas Bar at 541 Maplegrove Rd. with a plastic bag cov ering his right hand. He then approached the counter where he threatened to shoot the clerk and demanded cash. The employee turned over an undis closed amount of money to the suspect who ran to a blue vehicle parked in the lot. H^ then fled the scene in an unknown direction. A gun was indicated but none was seen. No one was physi cally injured as a result of the hold-up. The suspect is described as a white male, five-seven, 169 pounds with slightly balding brown hair and beard. He was wearing dark shorts and a plaid golf shirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Robbery Unit of the #2 District Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-825-4747 ext. 2277 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
