continued from p.1 seen him at 90 percent of the vote," McLaughlin said. "You don't see that, you see a very, very healthy opposition." McLaughlin ran for the mayor's seat in 2010 and secured 2,083 votes, while this time around he captured 9,947. "To see almost 10,000 votes is quite a humbling experience," he said. "Democracy was a fabulous and powerful force today." Rivals Gordon Brennan, Mary Kennedy and Greg Warchol lagged well behind. Voter turnout for the election topped 33 per cent, compared to almost 40 per cent in 2010. Burton thanked his family and volunteers for their support in helping him win a third consecutive term as mayor. "Thank you for such a job well done, and please let me give a special thanks to my family," he said. "Your support sustains me. They make me feel like such a lucky man." A record 4,930 voters turned out during the 10 days of advance polls, the Town stated last week. As of Nomination Day, Sept. 12, there were 125,722 eligible voters in Oakville compared to only 121,330 in 2010. The campaign was not without its share of controversy. In the early days Burton announced he was endorsing all the incumbents, asking voters to reinstate the current council to carry out the vision of a Livable Oakville. Many of those incumbents are being returned to office. The only upset of election night came in the Burton says voters show they are happy with Livable Oakville During the campaign, candidates squared off at all-candidates meetings hosted by residents associations in Ward 1 and Ward 3, and at the only mayoral debate, which was held by the Chamber of Commerce. Brennan said he was concerned about the effect climate change could have on the Town's infrastructure while Kennedy focused on safety . Warchol's campaign issue was fluoridation of the water. McLaughlin also went on to file a complaint with the Town Clerk asking that the Town's Integrity Commissioner investigate allegations of misconduct by Burton. "There will be the Integrity Commissioner and those very serious complaints that will be dealt with next," McLaughlin said, suggesting he may look at challenging the process in the courts. Council is expected to deal with the complaint at its next council meeting and vote on whether it should be passed along to the Integrity Commissioner. Burton said the election results show Oakville voters are happy with the Livable Oakville plan that was created with "huge public participation" and said he is pleased to be leading the way for another four years. "Our renewed and stronger mandate means the people want to continue on the path to be Canada's most livable town in Canada's most sustainable, and safest, Region," Burton said. 3 | Thursday, October 30, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com INJURED?
