S E D IT O R Caught in this winter's icy grip? Make the most of it. Take up a winter sport. The ski hills, snow shoe trails and cross country trails are in good shape, including the local facilities in Halton - Glen Eden (down hill skiing and snowboarding). Kelso Park. Hilton Falls. Crawford Lake, Rattlesnake Point. Mountsberg - all ner Milton, ind Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The outdoor rinks are frozen solid, great for skating. And. don't forget there are opportunities for winter hiking. So. there's no need to shiver through this winter, one of the coldest in years. Last Friday, a small group of about 20 hearty, adventurous cross country skiers took to the trails at Hilton Falls for its celebrated Moonlight Ski - an event that can only be held if there's enough snow on the trails. Not only is this event dependent on sufficient snow - the tem perature is also a factor. Despite the bit ing cold, the trails in the wooded area near the falls - which turns into an ice sculpture - were protected from the wind. The full moon was also the " brightest I've seen in years," said Ron Kindt, who organizes the park's Moonlight Ski events. Five volunteer guides - all of them expert cross country skiers from the Halton Outdoor Club - take skiers in small groups along the trails to a huge campfire where hot chocolate is served and marshmallows can be roasted. Moonlight Skis have been organized at Hilton Falls for about a dozen years, said Kindt, but the winters haven't always been kind to the park's efforts to promote local skiing. Each fall. Kindt sets three dates - a Friday in January. February and March when the full moon is at its brightest, and "some years we've had to cancel all three dales. Other years we end up with only one night. " 1 remember one year we held a Moonlight Ski in March, and last year, we had a snowstorm the only night we held one." Once out on the trails, skiers were treated to fairly well lit trails. " This is the brightest moon 1 can remember," said Kindt. Other years, skiers took to the trails under a foggy sky for one of the darkest Moonlight Skis in memory. The 1.592-acre Conservation Halton park, on Campbellville Road - or Regional Road 5 just west of Appleby Line west of Milton - boasts some of the most scenic trails in Halton. The next two Moonlight Ski events this winter are scheduled for Feb. 14 and March 14 from 6:30 - 9 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children. Rental equipment is available by reservation only. To register and rent equipment and to check ski conditions - call Hilton Falls at 905-854-0262. The park offers daytime skiing.
