St. Columba's rebuilds after sale of Turner Chapel leaves it homeless St. Columba's Church is here to stay. Homeless after the sale of his toric Turner Chapel last year, its home for 14 years, the small feisty Independent Anglican Church Canada congregation set about to pick up the pieces and start anew at a new location. For the past seven months, services have been held at St. Stephen the Martyr Polish National Catholic Church, 404 Morrison Rd., at 11:30 a.m. "We lost half of our congrega tion," said Archbishop Peter Goodrich after Turner Chapel, built in 1890 by escaped black slaves who came to Oakville via the Underground Railroad, was sold by the A M E (African Methodist Episcopal) Church last year. " We were so hurt by what hap pened. We had 35 people when we left Turner Chapel. Now we have 15. " After we put in so much time and effort into the church, we've been asked to leave." The congregation left every thing behind. St. Columba's had permission from the A M E Church to use the building with out a lease, and had renovated the structure at a cost of S I00,000 to S130,000, said the archbishop. He said the sale of the building " by the new administration at the A M E Church" was sudden. "We're slowly coming back. We have about a half dozen peo ple attending services and I feel confident the congregation can be built up' again. Emotions were running very high. A lot of what happened is now a blur. There was so much unhappiness about what happened. We had put so much confidence in the direction we were heading. But we're start ing to rebuild." St. Columba's has a five-year lease at St. Stephen.
