Eight years ago, Cheryl Vallender -- this year's gala organizer -- lost her infant son Max to the severe type-1 SMA, a progressive neuro-muscular disease that causes gradual paralysis. The condition is often compared to a childhood version of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known also as Lou Gehrig's disease. "We think of Max every day and wish we could have him here with us -- that's why we do this -- for him and for the families whose children are fighting SMA right now," Vallender said in a press release. The annual gala has raised more than $550,000 in the past eight years its been held for Families of SMA Canada. This year's honouree is Arran Edward Deegan, who is four years old and who was diagnosed with SMA when he was 18 months old. "His family credits the support they received from the Families of SMA community with giving them hope again," stated the release.
