Oakville's Terry Fox Run will be held on Sunday Sept. 14 at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre on Third Line south of Upper Middle Road from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. This year's theme is Unbeatable "When Terry was diagnosed, he had only a 20-30 per cent chance of recovery, compared to more than 80 per cent today - and he would not have lost his leg." said Darrell reflecting on the advances in research and treatment thanks to funds raised by the Terry Fox Run. His sentiment and emotion was echoed by Joan Gibb, President of the Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, a cancer society volunteer for 33 years who coordinated Terry's visit here. "I always feel honoured and emotion al when I'm around any member of the Fox family. Teny Fox came through Oakville on July 13, 1980, a day later than scheduled." Before the days of cellphones and email, quick thinking was required "to find people" to meet the runner. Gibb quickly recruited volunteers at a car rally sponsored by the former Oakville Journal Record at Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, and arranged for Terry to give one of his pas sionate speeches there. "I had two days to fine tune this onelegged runner's visit to Oakville. Darrell was the first to arrive by limousine, fol lowed by Terry about an hour later. "In the space of about two-and-a-half hours, we raised $3,000 from the sale of T-shirts, and we were able to present him with a make-shift cheque for $ 11,300, the result of one week of fundraising." On this cheque, included in Gibb's thick scrapbook, are the words "Thank you for your tremendous support" above Terry's signature. "He wrote that note after running 25 miles," said Gibb, adding that three months of fundraising amounted to $113,000 for the Marathon of Hope. "Darrell, thank you for keeping Terry's dream alive," she concluded. "We should all have dreams." P le a se ca ll <9° 5' 8 2 0 -5 7 2 8 www.raynerbridge.com Spirit. O u r prices NEVER [ been so low!
