A 8 - The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e sd a y M a y 7, 2003 Dam built to block flow of asphalt (Continued from page A1) The vehicle rolled into the ditch between the ramp and the highway, spilling its load of 35 metric tons of bubbling liquid asphalt into the ditch. Oakville Fire Department Public Education and Special Projects Officer Rick Barrett explained that six vehicles, includ ing the Ha/-Mat (hazardous mate rials) truck, responded to the scene. Firefighters' first order of busi ness was to quickly extricate the driver who was taken by air ambu lance to Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital. They then built a dam to block the asphalt, which fortunate ly was contained to the ditch, from flowing into an adjacent creek. According to Barrett, the asphalt was scalding hot, around 600F when loaded. The Ministry of the Environment was contacted, as was Team I Environmental to carry out the clean-up of the asphalt. According to Const. Motz. the QEW was closed in both directions for about 20 minutes while the air ambulance landed. The ramp itself was closed most of the day for clean-up and the police investiga tion. Witnesses are asked to please call OPP Const. Bourrie at 905- 681-2511. In July 2000. a 28-year old Ancaster man was killed when the tanker truck he was driving rolled on the newly-opened ramp from Royal Windsor Drive. The truck, owned by the Jeffbrett Group of Dundas, was being driven by Cory Dufour when the vehicle rolled over into the ditch while negotiating the ramp. An air ambulance crew rushed to the scene and assisted, but Dufour was pronounced dead at the scene. The tanker was carrying approximately 38 metric tons of powder cement, which fortunately remained contained.
