The Oakville Beaver, Tuesday December 21, 2004 - A7 April 30 deadline for school closure decisions Continued from page A1 Last June, the Province allowed boards to push the deadline for coming up with a list of schools to be studied for closure from Dec. 31 to Jan. 15. Closure decisions then must follow by April 30 to take effect the following September. So far, there's been no news from the Province on the issue of funding for new schools. The board could afford to wait a year on clo sure decisions, but now must proceed or face the possibility of venturing into the red on its budget. Gladys Speers, Lome Skuce and Sheridan pub lic schools had all been involved in previous clo sure studies. Gladys Speers is a Junior Kindergarten (JK) to Grade 6 school operating with 192 students in west Oakville. Lome Skuce is a JK-Grade 5 schools with 177 students and Sheridan is a JK-Grade 5 school with 314 students. Both are located in northeast Oakville. In southeast Oakville, over the past year, a study has looked at schools in the area including Chisholm, Maple Grove, Linbrook, EJ. James, Brantwood and New Central. Now a committee is to be struck to select which should close -- though the board's capital strategic plan outlines potential closure in 2006 for New Central and Linbrook. New Central, a Grades 6-8 school has been deemed not to be a viable school-- with only 113 students -- unless the board continues to pay extra money for staffing. Brantwood, a JK-Grade 5 school has 182 stu dents. Both Brantwood and New Central pay for school operation and administration for a com bined student total of 276. Currently the board's Capital Strategic Plan allows for a school to be built when there are 500 pupils who would attend. The board is also looking at building a school in the northeast community of Clearview, but such a move would likely require closure of fur ther schools and boundary changes to redirect students in southeast Oakville. The southeast has a strong French Immersion program where there are 332 students in JKGrade 5 at Linbrook Public School, and 514 in Grades 6-8 at E. J. James Public School.
