14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 22, 2003 Two men face fraud charges Two Toronto men have been arrested by the Halton Regional Police in connec tion with an alleged fraudulent debit card scheme. On Aug. 15, investigators were alert ed to a discrepancy at an ATM at a Royal Bank branch in Oakville. Police said officers arrived and found two men with a number of fraudulent debit cards mak ing false deposits, and subsequently withdrawals, from the ATM. More than 60 counterfeit debit cards, many with the PIN written on them, were also seized, according to the police. The investigation into the origin of the cards is ongoing. Denis Saciragic, 25, of Wellesley St. E., Toronto, and Vasilis Georgitsakis, 29, of Queen Street, Toronto, are charged with 15 counts each of fraud under $5*000, using fraudulent credit card data and possession of credit card data. Police remind residents to safeguard their debit and credit cards and immedi ately report lost or stolen cards or dis crepancies in their monthly statements; never leave receipts at bank machines, destroy any leftover paperwork; never share personal information over the phone unless you initiate the call; destroy unsolicited pre-approved credit card applications, credit card receipts and other such documents; avoid keep ing a written record of your PIN and SIN if possible and never keep this informa tion in your wallet. Police to hold citizen academy Anyone interested in learning more about policing in Halton should consider attending the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) set to begin next month. The academy, which will begin Sept. 9 at Halton Re gional Centre. 1151 Bronte Rd., will consist o f 12 sessions designed to give participants a first-hand look at the life of a police officer and provide them with a better understanding of the services provided to the Halton community. Topics will include live demonstrations from the public safety unit. Tactical and Rescue Unit (TRU), Com m unication Bureau, Polygraph Unit and a special opportunity to partici pate in a live scenario. Other topics include the Drug and M ortality Unit, Intelligence Bureau, Terrorism, Fraud, Ma jo r Crime Unit and many other police bureaus. Graduates of the CPA will receive a framed certificate, a golf shirt and a photograph of the graduating class. "We are searching for a cross section of people from our com munity to participate. We have found that the questions and discussion are far more interest ing and informative when the class com position is more diverse, " said Inspector Jackie Gordon. ``CPA offers an excellent opportunity to create new part nerships between the police and the community and to create an opportunity for open dialogue with the officers who deliver our services," said Insp.
