4 - The Oakville Beaver, F rida y S e p te m b e r 19, 2003 Special Skills Dog has improved partner's quality of life (Continued from page 1) training centre as its Special Skills Dogs of Canada program is one of four recipients of this year's lottery proceeds. The others are the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Charitable Corporation, Halton Women's Place and the Community Foundation of Oakville Ontario Endowment for Children and Youth in Recreation fund. "My dog can do much more than wag her tail and would you believe she cost $20,000. but to me she is worth much, much more," said Noelle. The cost of her Special Skills Dog was paid through dona tions made to the Lions Foundation, not by recipients' families. "My parents found out about Special Skills Dogs (of Canada) through a friend of theirs who had always sponsored Canine Vision Canada dogs (for the blind)," said the Grade 8 student at Mount Carmel School in Cadisle. "They met me and decided I needed a dog. They suggested that I visit an open house at the Oakville (dog-training) school. "I was so very impressed with the dogs and the trainers that 1 wanted to sign up immediately. But you have to have an eval uation to see if you would benefit from having a dog. Luckily I qualified to get a dog. "I was so excited, probably more excit ed than at Christmas time." Noelle said she "counted down the days" to her 17-day training program at the Lions Foundation. "The school is a beautiful place, the rooms are like hotel rooms and it was like eating in a restaurant every day." After three days of "hard work" to learn "a lot about dogs and training, I had my furry friend beside me. Then the really hard work began." Noelle and Whisper graduated from the program a little over a year ago. "At last after many ups and down and some tears and much happiness, the big day was here. Our class was so lucky to have so many very nice trainers who inspired us to push ourselves to the limit and to succeed. "On my graduation night, a new place was added into my heart," said Noelle. "That place was for Whisper Leslie. "We got home and our life together real ly began. People tend to think of periodon tal (gum) disease in terms of their teeth, but many don't realize that gum disease is a serious infection that can release harmful bacteria into the bloodstream. The end result can mean additional health risks for people whose health is already affected by other diseases, or lead to serious complications like heart Recent research has shown that periodontal infection, far from being just an oral health problem, may contribute to the develop ment of heart disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases and premature, underweight births. Stress can also affect periodontal disease making the infection more severe and harder to fight. ^ fjr °e to W IN o n e O 46" S o n y . Many Canadians have oral exams each year to check for cavities and tooth decay.
