But to developers, environmentalists and Town planners, along with a lot o f birds, animals and trees, those green blobs are crucially important. What they represent are environmen tally important areas o f north Oakville that w ill be o ff limits for development. A t an open house at Town Hall on Thursday night, the public got its first look at the results, thus far. o f the Town's subwatershed studies for the lands north o f Dundas Street where future town growth is expected to occur. After a lot o f mapping and analysis o f Oakville ponds, streams, woodlots. meadows, valleys and wetlands, the final result boils down to nine core areas that w ill be recommended for protection and preservation. The areas include the Sixteen Mile Creek and Joshua Creek valleys, as well as areas along the branches o f Morrison Creek and features o f the Trafalgar Moraine. Ray Tufgar. manager o f the consult ing team Totten Sims Hubicki Associates, says the process began with taking an inventory and mapping all the environmental features in the 7,600acre area slated for future development. The features were then analyzed to determine which were most viable and diverse, with key areas grouped togeth er to establish " core" natural areas. Representatives from the Town, the Region o f Halton, Conservation Halton and the provincial ministries o f M unicipal A ffa irs and Natural Resources worked together on an Interagency Review to develop a plan for the natural areas. Even though the province is now in the middle o f an elec tion. Halton officials are still holding the incumbent govern ment to its word that it w ill provide some form o f compensa tion. " Now that things are in a different place because o f the election, hopefully (provincial) staff w ill still be able to fol low through w ith the information given," said Halton Commissioner o f Community Services Adelina Urbanksi, (See 'Most' page A7) Veteran councillor calls it quits By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF While Ward 2 councillor Linda Hardacre is proud o f her successes during nine years in office, she's quick to point out that nothing could have been accomplished without the sup port o f her constituents and their affinity for the community. " They really care about where they live," said Hardacre, who recent ly announced that she w ill not seek a fourth term in the Nov. 10 municipal election. "They care what's right out side their front door and beyond." First elected to Council in 1994, Hardacre retained her Ward 2 seat in 1997 by beating three other con tenders. She earned a third term by besting a lone opponent in 2000. The celebration at the museum. 8 Navy St., w ill feature an Erchless antique show, a one-act play called Van Diemen's Land by the Upper Canada Theatre Company, afternoon musical entertainment, a display o f first phase restoration photographs o f Custom House, plus self-guided Heritage Walking Tours, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Proceeds from the day's activities w ill go to the continued restoration o f the Custom House. Oakville Museum visitors can take a guided tour o f the Custom House built in 1856, and Erchless, the home o f Col. W illiam Chisholm completed in 1858.
