A2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 10, 2003 Map defines areas available for development M ap showing the nine green areas designated as o ff-lim its fo r development. (Continued from page A1) protect them as integral environmental units." explained Tufgar. " Primarily the focus is going to be on preserving and enhancing these areas." What that really boils down to, says O akville Planning D irector Peter Cheatley, is no development in the green blobs. " This map defines the area that is available fo r development," says Cheatley. The core areas are to be linked, whenever possible by stream corridors or other natural features. Cheatley said the interagency review was a unique and positive process that allowed agencies like the M inistry o f Natural Resources and Conservation Halton a chance to have input early in the planning process. The results o f the subwatershed study w ill feed naturally into O akville's secondary planning process, which begins its public consultation phase on Sept. 18 w ith a week-long design charette. Cheatley admits that the green blobs, which wiggle and reach throughout the north Oakville area, won't necessarily allow for a tidy planning map. Still, he hopes that w ill encourage a smarter, more compact form o f devel opment than has been created in many places elsewhere in the town. The core areas w ill be designated as natural areas where development w ill be prohibited, with the exception o f roads and u tility corridors where neces sary. The area north o f Dundas Street, south o f Hwy. 407, east o f Ninth Line and west o f Tremaine Road is expected to accommodate-55,000 new residents and provide 35,000 new jobs by 2016.
