continued from p.7 Local rabbi advises his congregation to ignore `rhetoric' violent confrontation." A person was observed photographing protesters and later seen entering Palestine House. Both groups mounted amplified speakers to play cultural music at almost deafening levels. One JDL supporter told the Beaver he covered his face because of fear of repercussion. Fitzpatrick said it's not illegal to wear a mask at a protest unless a person has intent to commit a criminal act. Several representatives from Palestine House also declined comment when asked for their reaction to the protest. On Monday, Kitmitto again answered the phone at Palestine House and told the Beaver, "It's a community centre. It has nothing to do with any other things," she said. "People come to do activities." Halton police said they had not received any reports about Kitmitto's alleged post. Halton Police Diversity Coordinator Sgt. Mark Dienstmann also did not have knowledge of the Facebook post, but provided general information on what may constitute a hate-motivated crime. "In general, a hate crime would be investigated when the intent targets an identified group, and they're being targeted for who they are as opposed to anything they may have done," Dienstmann said. Rabbi Stephen Wise of the ShaareiBeth El Congregation of Halton in Oakville said the post had been brought to his attention, and that members of his congregation were upset by it. "...it's sickening actually," Wise said of the Facebook comment. Wise said he understands it can be difficult to ignore the "rhetoric" but has advised people not to engage in the dialogue, especially on Facebook. "I counsel people to ignore and, instead, turn inward and say `What can we do?,'" he said. Suraski said members of JDL are calling on Palestine House's board directors to retract the alleged statements. 11 | Thursday, November 27, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Peel police spokesperson Cst. Lillian Fitzpatrick confirmed that prior to the protest, Criminal Investigation Bureau officers had spoken to Palestine House and JDL representatives to make them aware of legal ramifications in hopes of avoiding a repeat of the summer hostilities. "It was just part of developing a strategy (for it) to go peacefully without any need for any police interference," Fitzpatrick said.
