Jim Flack. Sheridan's athletic direc tor. last week named Steve Leggitt and Jen Herzog coaches of the men's and women's vol leyball teams respective ly. Both coaches have experience in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (C IS ) league, the governing body for uni versity sports in Canada. Leggitt joins the Bruins from St. M ary's College in Alberta where he was the coach. Before that, Leggitt was an assistant coach with the University o f Calgary, a perennial power in Canadian university ranks. "Steve is so enthusiastic, it's conta gious." Herzog joins the wom en's team after coaching at the University of W aterloo. Herzog played at M cM aster is a nationally-certified coach. The athletes train between 6-9 hours each week. At the Reach for the Sky meet, host ed by Gem ini Gym nastics, Sarah Thevenin led the way picking up top spot in the Novice A division. She used. In Argo B, Madison Horton third and Caroline Via finishing sixth. The Cadette B class saw Melissa Taylor post a second-place spot and teammate Andrea Beaudoin Cote finish seventh. Rachele Benjamin finished seventh in Tyro B . while Jen Yacula was ninth. In Open A. Casey Pecarski finished fourth. The gymnasts also competed at the Safari Adventure meet at East York Gymnastics Club. In the Tyro A division. Angela W hitehead finished third all-around after posting a second in bars, third in beam, fifth on floor and eighth on vault. Teammate Jimenez finished fourth with a second on bars, fifth on beam, six on floor and vault. Jenna Seagrove used a third on floor, fifth on bars and eighth on beam to finished ninth all-around. M ichelle Rooney. Alana Longmoore. competed in its first competition. Lifeguard com petitions involve simulated technical events including first-aid and water rescue. They also include a wide range of physical swimming events. These events provide a physical and mental challenge to lifeguards, which directly relate to the skills learned through the training courses required to become a lifeguard. In addition to this, lifesaving is now a demonstration sport in both the Commonwealth and O lym pic games. Highlights o f the com petition include: · The team of Brad Johnston and Jam ie Tolan winning Gold in the line throw competition with a time of 11.77 seconds, fractions of a second off the Canadian record time of 11.75. · Erin Doherty making the B finals in 50m M anikin, and Ironguard. · The Wom en's relay team making A finals of all three relays. · The M en's relay team making A finals in medley relay, and B finals in the M anikin, and obstacle relay. The current lifeguard team program in O akville was started in the summer of 2000 as a training incentive. O akville Lifeguard teams are com prised of current part-time lifeguards and sw imming instructors. Riptide captain Brad Johnston and Coach Kevin Wong spearheaded this initiative, which has resulted in high staff morale and continued commit ment to lifeguarding in the Town of Oakville. Over the last two years the club has had more than 30 participants, logged hundreds of hours of practice time and has been represented at 10 com peti tions. The O akville Lifeguard team is gearing up for its third season o f com petition this summer. In addition to the regular Aquatic Services training program, lifeguard teams practice 2- 3 times per week and compete in 4-5 competitions through out the summer. They are scheduled to compete at the Ontario Lifeguard Championships, which w ill be held in Ottawa this August. Longhorns still perfect, sign kicker Segin With a convincing 31-21 win in Oshawa last weekend, the Oakville Longhorns remain undefeated in Northern Fixrtball Conference play. The Longhorns, with a 2-0 record, arc in a three-way tie for first place w ith the Mississauga Wolverines and North Bay Bulldogs. The Oakville team scored 94 points so far this season while giving up only 21. Next up for the 10-time defending provincial champs is a home game June 14 against Mega City. The games starts at 6 p.m. at Bronte Athletic Field and w ill see the return of Howard Betty, a former member of the Longhorns who is currently the Maddogs head coach. U16 Red Devils capture tourney title W ith help from three O akville players, the Oakville Red Devils under-16 soccer team beat Woodbridge Strikers to capture the Woodbridge Showcase Weekend invitational tournament last month. The Red Devils came from a 1-0 deficit to beat Woodbridge 2-1 in the tournament's championship match. Oakville cruised into the final with a 4-1 win over North York Azzuri in the semifinal. Oakville's Gavin Russell led the way with two goals. Other Oakville players on the team are Connor Orchard-Young. and Andrew Buxton-Forman. The Red Devils were competing in the Ontario Youth Soccer League event after being promoted from the South Region Soccer League. Woodbridge is the defending national champions. The team opened tournament play with a 4-1 w in over Nepean Hot Spurs. Game 2 saw Oakville double up the Oshawa Kicks 4-2 with two first-half strikes. The Red Devils tied Woodbridge 2-2 in their final round-robin game. Oakville took a 2-0 lead into the second half only to see Woodbridge connect for w o goals in the final half to earn the draw.
