www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, December 5, 2014 | 20 March of Dimes door-to-door campaign is knocking on doors North America's longest-running, door-to-door fundraising campaign kicks off this month. Local volunteers will be canvassing throughout the town for the March of Dimes, which held its first door-to-door campaign in 1951. The March of Dimes provides essential programs and services to help increase the independence and community participation of people with physical disabilities. "Our goal is to raise $15,000 in Oakville,"said Mary Lynne Stewart, director of fund development and communications for March of Dimes Canada. "With such a supportive community, I know that everyone will do what they can so we can exceed our goal." The March of Dimes' assistive device program (ADP) is 100 per cent supported by donations. It provides assistance to people with disabilities towards the purchase and maintenance of equipment such as manual and motorized wheelchairs, bath aids, seating inserts, wheelchair cushions, canes, crutches and walkers. Last year, March of Dimes' ADP provided 92 devices, valued at more than $55,000, to Oakvillearea residents with disabilities. Other programs supported by the campaign include a unique rehabilitation program, conductive education and social opportunities for people with disabilities. The campaign traditionally began in January but requests from volunteers to start the campaign earlier in better weather means it will be starting a month earlier this year. March of Dimes Canada is the largest charitable rehabilitation organization in Ontario, providing a wide variety of programs and services to more than 40,000 people annually in communities across the province. For those interested in volunteering or donating to this year's campaign, contact 1-800-263-3463, ext. 7705 or visit the website at www.mymod.ca/ doortodoor.
