C2 · The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 23, 2003 Photos by Harrison Smith · Oakville Beaver Ten teams representing various local companies took part in the Heart and Stroke Foundation's annual Big Bike for Stroke on Saturday in downtown Oakville. A second event was held Wednesday on W inston Park Drive. Almost $60,(MM) was raised. Each team rode a 30-seat bicycle around a designated route. The two Oakville W heeltors teams, above, representing the Oakville, Milton and District Real Estate Boards, raised almost $15,000 combined. The C IB C team, headed by Mobina Dam ji, raised almost $13,000. CROUP-PEDALLING: "Champs" benefit from bowling club's winning strike Club raises $2,000for War Amps The Oakville Lawn Bowling Club has raised more than $2,000 for The War Amps' C H A M P (child amputee) program. The Club's July 1 event was part of the nationwide C H A M P Day. Club bowlers dress casually or in all formal while called "Jitney." To do the latter, members pay $2. half of which usually goes for prize money.and half to the club. On C H A M P Day. all the money went to CHAMP. The Oakville Lawn Bowling Club, founded in 1904, has hosted its C H A M P Day for the past 10 years. Last year. SI ,3(X) was raised, thanks to mem bers as well as visitors who simply dropped by and donated money. On hand this time around was C H A M P "graduate" and current Safety Events Co-ordinator Kelly Rankin. Tenyear-old child amputee Maeghen Kowal, along with parents Kim and Erik, also took pan. This year the local event attracted its first sponsors, the Power Workers Union and David Barrick Denture Clinic. C H A M P is built on the Winner's Circle philosophy which encourages child amputees to accept their amputa tions and develop a positive approach to challenges. It also offers comprehensive services for the families of child amputees. Children from birth to 18 years of age. who are born missing one or more limbs or who lose limbs due to an acci dent or medical causes, can enroll in the C H A M P Program.
