For Zmirak and six other teammates, it was their last high school hoops game. Some OFSAA consolation for Hawks By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Loyola gained a bit of consolation at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (O F S A A ) provincial A A A volleyball champi onships over the Nov. 21/22 weekend. More specifically they gained a berth into the consolation champi onship game which they lost 2-1 to St. Joseph (25-15, 21-25.20-18). There was not much consolation for Loyola in the championship game, itself, however, as they let a seven- point lead slip away in the third and deciding game. The .result pretty much mirrored their tournament as a whole. They had a very slow start dropping their first five games on the opening Friday (Nov. 21). Peter McCusker ·Oakville Beaver or the St. Thomas Aquinas girls basketball team, their silver medal at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (O F S A A ) triple-A provincial championships in Sudbury this past weekend marked the end of an era. In a battle of the top two seeds, #2 ranked Aquinas Raiders lost the tripleA A A provincial championship game 59-50 to top seeded Governor Simcoe Redcoats of St. Catharines. Scoring for Aquinas were Karen Zmirak (27), Andrea Sergautis (9), Sarah Dillon (6), Nina Joy Mueller (5) and Alex Yurichuk (3). Top scorers for Governor Simcoe were Sam Scull (27), Sarah Wilson (14). Sam Maingot (9) and L.B . Brown (6). " They (Governor Simcoe) got up 55-50 with a couple of minutes remaining, and then we had to start fouling and it ended up being a ninepoint game," said Raiders coach Mike Giammichele. " In essence it was a five-point game." The two teams had very contrast ing styles. " W e're small and athletic. And they're big -- very big. They start two girls, 6-3 (Sam Scull), another is 6-2 (Sarah Wilson). (W ilson) is going to Niagara University (in the U .S.) and (Scull) is in Grade 1 1 but she'll probably end up in the States as well." " So they were trying to get the ball inside -- we're more of a perimeter team." Aquinas clung to a four-point lead at the break. " We tried to make an adjustment because they were hurting us inside and we said we're going to let their guards beat us. " Their guards, to give them credit, made some shots. So then we had to go back to do what we were doing before. They started pounding the ball inside." Aquinas wasn't without its own threats. Their top players -- Karen Zmirak, Sarah Dillon and Andrea Sergautis -- all came through, he said, led by Karen Zmirak with 27 points in the championship game. " She was absolutely outstanding." Needless to say the trio w ill all be playing university ball next September -- Sergautis and Dillon in Canada while Zmirak is still being courted State-side for both basketball and soccer. Much of the solid supporting cast w ill also be gone, as well, including Krista Sestokas, Nina Joy Mueller, Cheryl Silva and Katie McKenna. " For seven of those nine girls, it was their final high school basketball game,"said Giammichele. " so it was quite emotional. " Like obviously it's their last game and you lose a championship, you're that close." Nevertheless, he is confident that the passage of time w ill quickly restore the lustre of their well earned silver medal. " It was a very successful season. We had four goals: go undefeated in league play, win a Halton champi onship. qualify for O FSA A , and our fourth was win a gold at O FSA A which this school has never done. " So we accomplished three of those goals and came, oh, so close to the fourth one. " So it hurts now but when you take a step back there are an awful lot of teams that would like to be in our position." It marks the end of an era for the girls basketball team at Aquinas which has won its last six straight Halton championships (not including a strike year in which it did not field a team). And throughout that string they did not lose a Halton league or playoff game.
