New council gets advice from old members By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF If rookie Town councillors don't mess with Oakville's three " sacred cows" -- trees, the lakefront and Lakeshore Road -- they should make it to the next election. That was the advice offered by Oakville Liberal MP Bonnie Brown in her address at Monday's inaugural council meeting. Piper George Duncan led Mayor Ann Mulvale and Oakville's 12 new councillors into the Town Hall council chambers in front of a standingroom only crowd of family and friends. St. Andrew's Children's Choir sang O Canada in English and French, before Father David Wynen of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church led the invocation. After brief speeches by Brown and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, a former Ward 1 Local and Regional councillor of 18 years, the new council was sworn in by Judge Richard LeDressay. Rev. Don Gibson of St. John's United Church then per formed the benediction and Mulvale gave the inaugural address outlining the challenges that lay before the new council that will serve in public office from now until Nov. 30, 2006. The new Council then passed the membership of vari ous Town committees -- com mittees on which the local councillors will serve -- as well as next year's schedule of meet ings. Brown, a former municipal councillor, paid tribute to returning members of council Almost all furniture" & sleep sets on Sears stores Furniture and sleep sets are available at the following Greater Toronto locations: describing them as "true defenders of the heritage laid down by previous councils" and said residents can "trust them to cany on as they have." The Liberal MP then welcomed new councillors to public office saying, "You'll find you can't make all the people happy all the time, but if you lean on the wisdom of experienced members of council and the mayor, you'll do well." Brown advised new councillors to pro tect trees, the view of and access to the waterfront and Lakeshore Road. " Don't monkey with any of those things or else the wrath of the public will descend." said Brown, adding. "Those are the sacred cows." Flynn, who said he'd always wondered what it was like to sit in the audience at council, joked, "I can't wait to call my local councillor to complain about something." While the mayor recited her oath of office individually, the remainder of council joined together in their oath of office. Upon donning the mayor's chain of office -- worn at all council meetings -- Mulvale gave her "personal pledge" to "continue to speak strongly on behalf of the interests of all the people of Oakville." " You can count on my continued com mitment to this community." said the mayor who won the seat by 1 5 votes in the Nov. 10 municipal election. The seven returning members of council and five new ones have already had a twoday orientation that set out the legal and procedural framework within which they must operate.
