Montreal artist has first Ontario show in downtown Oakville coffee shop Montreal-based artist Modest Bursucianu is showing a large selection of his work in Oakville. Brought here by his cousin's wife, Irina Sandhu, Bursucianu is hoping to get a feel for the Greater Toronto Area and hopefully begin showing more work in the area. Already with work in galleries in Montreal and New York City, and with plans to show in Japan next year, it makes sense for Bursucianu to be here, testing new waters. That's not to say he wasn't a little concerned to be showing his work at Timothy's coffee shop on Lakeshore Road. Coffee shops aren't known for their great lighting, but Timothy's, a two-storey job furnished with couches and displaying great views of down town Oakville life, was ready for fine art, Bursucianu's work definitely bene fiting from the worthy lighting. "I was very surprised; I didn't think a caf6 could be so prepared," said Bursucianu. "Here, it's very intimate. We talk, we take a coffee, it's more relaxed" than a typical gallery setting. Bursucianu's work is also fairly inti mate. His show is made up mostly of landscapes, which don't immediately define themselves as such. They are beyond Impressionism, making the land convey an emotion through colour and the seemingly furious brushstrokes. It takes a fair amount of watching to get the lay of the land. "An artist must observe," said Bursucianu. "We must be able to see everywhere something we can use in our work." · As well as painting what he observes, Bursucianu has put some thing of himself into his work, and the paintings are intriguing because of it. "I'm dedicating 100 percent to art," said Bursucianu, who is on sabbatical from his job as a high school photogra phy teacher in Montreal. "This is a beginning here." Busucianu's show will be at Timothy's World Coffee, 312 Lakeshore Rd. E. until the end of January.
