The Oakville Beaver, Tuesday D ecem ber 23, 2003 - C7 Oakville native in running for student entrepreneur of the year Derek Szeto, an Oakville native study ing at Queen's University, is one of three central region semi-finalists in the CIBC Student Entrepreneur of the Year competi tion. He was selected from 61post-secondary award nominees from Ontario for the development and operation of a top-rated innovative and entrepreneurial business. Szeto was chosen as a regional semi finalist for Redflagdeals.com, a GTAbased web site that alerts bargain-hunting consumers to Canadian retailing deals. The site currently boasts over 350,000 unique visitors and over 3.8 million page views every month. Szeto's successful formula has gener ated over $600,000 in to-date sales to one of its affiliates, and has given him top honours as one of the best student entre preneurs in the central Canada region. "By the end of the decade, one in five Canadians will be their own boss, and entrepreneurs like Derek will be leading the charge," said Rob Paterson, Senior Vice President, Small Business Banking, CIBC. "Running a successful business while attending school is a challenge, but you'd never know it from the energy and commitment demonstrated by the semi finalists." .
