That was the m essage sent M onday by voters in Halton in selecting incum bent Joyce Savoline to her fourth straight term as regional chair. The veteran politician, a Burlington resident, earned 62 per cent o f M onday's votes and will maintain the title for anoth er three years. Savoline's 41,800 total easily beat out second-place finisher Brian Burton o f O akville who captured 12,555 votes. Neither Burlington's Anne M arsden nor Robert Heaton o f Halton Hills factored into the race. M arsden picked up 7,919 votes, while Heaton collected 4.660. Savoline said voters can expect her to continue to advo cate for good governance, espe cially in areas like developm ent and environm ental protection. Savoline. who was bom in Shanghai, China, and moved to C anada in 1953. w as first appointed regional chair in 1994 and appointed to a second term in 1997. In 2000, voters in Halton had an o p p ortunity to select the regional chair for the first time and opted for Savoline. She has lived in Burlington since 1973 with her husband. Ron. The couple has tw o grown children. S econd-place finisher B urton. w hose cam paign focused significantly on devel opm ent issues, said he expected a better result. " I'm very disappointed. I d id n 't expect to win but I thought I would do better than I did." he said. Burton said h e'll likely run for a political position in the next m unicipal election. Burton lives in O akville with his wife and has two universityaged daughters. His professional background is in electrical engi neering.
