On Thursday, Jan. 22, Dr. Hertzel Gerstein, endocrinologist and professor of Medicine & Population Health Institute chair in Diabetes Research at McMaster University, will be the guest speaker. Gerstein will talk about glucose and how the body uses it, the role of the pancreas and its challenges, and whether diabetes can be prevented, delayed, cured or at least put into remission. Diabetes is one of the most pervasive diseases, accounting for a large portion of all heart attacks, strokes, and deaths from cardiovascular disease. Having started his medical career in 1981, Gerstein began researching diabetes in the early 1990s. His research currently spans more than 50 countries and the expert is recognized as one of the world's leaders in the field. The speaker event will be held at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd. Registration and a cash bar open at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the speaker at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for members, $45 for non-members and $20 for students.
