Prevent fires at Christmas With the holiday season in full swing and everyone enjoying the fes tivities, the Oakville Fire Department is reminding everyone to take the time and prepare in order to have a fire safe Christmas. When picking your Christmas tree ensure it's fresh and not dropping nee dles. Always make a two-inch fresh cut before putting the tree in the stand and adding water. Keep the tree as far from heat vents and other heat sources as possible. Never block exit routes with the Christmas tree. Never use lighted candles on or near your Christmas tree. Carefully examine all electrical cords and lights for CSA approval and that they are in good working condi tion. Never use frayed or damaged elec trical cords. The use of candles and combustible Christmas displays including wreaths, synthetic and other materials can pose a serious fire hazard. Never leave candles unattended. Extinguish candles before leaving the room. Never allow candles in children's rooms. Always keep matches and lighters up and out of reach from children. Take the time to test your smoke alarms. Smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older should be discarded. Anyone who needs assistance with checking their alarm or who has ques tions should call the Oakville Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division at 905-338-4404. or the Public Education Office at 905-845-6601, ext. 3686.
