To help keep your pet safe from w in ter's chill, rem em ber three simple rules: 1) keep them warm . 2) walk sm art, and 3) there's no place like hom e! K eep th em W a r m ... Dogs that live outdoors, o r that spend m ore than 20 minutes outside during inclem ent w eather, should have a properly insulated, draft free dog house. T he house should be large enough for the dog to m ove around, but small enough to allow the d o g 's ow n body to keep the area warm. It should have a door flap or wind break to prevent cold air from getting in. A heated w ater contain er must also be provided to ensure readily available access to water. Unheated garages, sheds o r decks do not provide suitable shelter for any anim al. T he seem ingly w arm er retreat offers inherent dangers. Pets that becom e lost and seek these dry locations for shelter, can becom e trapped inside. T hirsty anim als m ay choose antifreeze, often found in garages at this tim e o f year, a poisonous drink with deadly results. Cars offer a dangerous place for anim als to w arm up. When getting in your car in the m orning tap the hood several tim es to dislodge any anim als that m ay have crawled up to escape the w inter weather. M any cats sus tain life-threatening injuries as a result o f taking retreat too close to a fan belt. W alk S m a r t ... Extrem e tem peratures can pose a risk to your d o g 's health. OAKVILLE & DISTRICT Seasons HUMANE SOCIETY (regular-sizeY CAMERA SHY? Libby is a German Short Haired Pointer with a sad story. When she came to the shelter she was emaciated. She was given lots of special attention to {jet her back on her feet and ready for a new home. She has been placed twice and returned each time. The first time was because she and the dot} in the household were not getting along well and the second home had a family breakup. She is a special dog that would love a home that understands the activity level of the breed, is tolerant of her pointing and flushing behaviours. She has proven that she really likes children and her favourite age seems to be ei£jht or older. She will need to be the only pet. If you are interested in adopting Libby, you should come down to the shelter and spend some time with her. Phone 905-1551 or log on to www.oakvillehumane.ca.
