That's because it has been one of the best for competitive performances, according to WOSS teacher and debate coach Hamish Guthrie, who shared the school's latest tournament results with the Oakville Beaver recently. White Oaks's newest victory came in-house on Dec. 5, 2014, claiming the top four spots at the Halton Regional Final. The teams consisted of Nicole Nowoselski and Denys Linkov (first), Taha Ahmed and Da- sha Metropolitansky (second), Kiara Hassan and Boya Zhang (third) and Emil Stanca and Zaid Salaheen (fourth). The top two teams will represent Halton at the provincial finals in Toronto in February. The students also nabbed eight of the top 10 positions for individual speakers. "Debaters see success perpetuating success. A pretty big pair of shoes is handed to them when they step onto this team. Each year they're challenged by the debaters before them to do well," said Guthrie, noting WOSS has 80100 debaters currently, mostly juniors. "They get better and better, partly through the fun of it and partly through the competitive pressure for wins."
